HALF TIME

Yesterday was midsummer. The longest day of the year, and in Sweden at least, the official start of summer. The temperature? 12 degrees Celcius. The weather? Buckets. Clouds. Umbrellas. Gusting. We spent the entire day with the friends that we usually spend Midsummer with, starting at noon (!). We haven’t always spent midsummer with them but of the past 19 midsummers we’ve probably spent at least half. They are a group of old Scout friends of Anders’ and their wives and children. Nowadays, some of the children are disappearing from the get-togethers. My kids would have been some of them...

WHIRRRRRRR

Martin: (from the other room) What’s a “more”? Liz: How do you spell it? Martin: M-O-R-E Liz: Oh. It’s the values or ethical standards of society. Martin: Like a norm? Liz: More or less. Liz: *giggles madly* Liz: See what I did there? Martin: *sigh* It’s the last week of school. Both Martin and Karin are done on Friday and summer vacation begins. Remember that feeling? The whole sunny summer stretching out in front of you? Days at the pool, evenings playing blindman’s bluff and statues on the lawn, visits to grandparents, freezers full of Fla-Vor-Ice popsicles. Mmmmmm yummy grape...

SUPER SLUG WITH NO APOLOGIES

What I have accomplished so far today: Woke up Karin and sang happy birthday to her and gave her her presents, with Anders & Martin, and kissed her goodbye (she left this morning for a week in Gothenburg at Gothia Cup). One load of laundry that didn’t really need to be done. Unloaded the dishwasher. Put some recycleables in their bins. Watered all the house plants. Made the bed. Showered & dressed, ate breakfast and lunch. Read the end of the book I was re-reading that was taking me forever to finish. Played numerous games of stupidity on the iPad....

MOTIVATION IS WHAT GETS YOU STARTED. HABIT IS WHAT KEEPS YOU GOING.*

Most weekday mornings The alarm goes off. I reach over and turn it off and get up. I slip on my house shoes and go to the bathroom without turning on any lights. Then I come back and still without turning on any lights, get underthings from my dresser, and in the (still dark) closet) pants and a top. Sometimes I turn the light on and stare at my clothes for a few minutes, but usually it’s a pretty quick selection process. Then I go back to the bathroom and get in the shower. Soap, shampoo, conditioner, shave if necessary,...

WHAT WE DID

When the weekend comes, what I want is not to have things to do, or errands to run or cleaning to get done. I want to RELAX, not think about work, sleep in, read books, watch West Wing and be a vegetable. Sometimes I don’t care if the sun is shining or it’s nice outside…I just want to be a slug in every possible way. Most weekends I get to do at least some of that. I almost always get to sleep in. I almost always get to read and watch some West Wing. But there are always things that...

A GOOD WEEKEND

I’ve never had so much fun cleaning the bathroom as I did this weekend. I clean the bathroom pretty regularly on the surface, but I’m not always so good about deep-cleaning…and I can’t remember the last time I did a COMPLETE clean. It was past time. I know there will be people totally judging me because my bathroom isn’t disinfectant-clean but give me a break. It works for us. Our house is HUGE and just keeping it TIDY is a full-time job and I already HAVE a full-time job. The kids had to help, and Karin had to help most...

THINGS, SOME GOOD, SOME NOT SO GOOD, SOME GREAT

The light is lying low over the fields, bathing the back of our house in gold and pink. There’s a line above the horizon demarcating a nimbus edge just before the blue starts. We had giant puffity clouds today, looking like a line of rounded marshmallow mountains, one an Ewok for a split second before it morphed into just another heavenly cottonball. There are fat little buds on the cherry tree but no blossoms yet. Everything is just about to burst…we had a couple of days of rain and you could really see the effect…hedges went green, the fields went...

WALKING ON SUNSHINE

The sun is shining, though it’s still a little chilly out, and for some stupid reason I am inside. I have a bad headache, which is part of the reason, because I know if I go outside before the headache is totally gone, the sun will pierce through my eyeballs and my brain will spontaneously combust. I was out in the sun a bit yesterday…you have to ease into these things when you’re a troglodyte homebody like me. Karin and I whacked down the dead long grass in the front garden and removed the pine branches from the bed under...

COMPELLED BUT NOT COMPELLING

There still seems to be a pull for me away from the computer and away from writing; I’m not 100% sure what is causing it. I know that part of it is because of sitting at a computer for 10 or so hours nearly every day, intensely working. When I come home, I still check emails and a few other not really essential things on the ipad or PC but to sit down and write seems to take more effort than it used to. Whatever…I’m prepared to fake it ’til I make it. The sun has been shining nearly every...

HALF SLUG HALF BEE (the busy kind)

Anders and Karin left at 5’ohgod in the morning to drive a couple hours north for an all-day soccer tournament. They JUST called (at 9:00 pm!) and are finally done with everything, but Karin still has to shower before they jump in the car to come home. Which means they won’t be home before nearly midnight on a school night. Horrors! Their team came in second and they played great…Karin scored the only goal in the final and they were tied and into sudden death before the other team managed to score again. Martin and I started the day out...
