3 THINGS

3 things I’m enjoying right now: Our own produce, including cherries, cucumbers, potatoes, and tiny baby carrots Sunny summery days that so far have not been too hot (except once) Re-reading old sci-fi and fantasy favorites 3 things I am thinking about rather too much of the time: Aging My weight Work, when I’m off The last 3 really good NEW books I read recently: The Jellyfish Problem by Tessa Yang Briefly Very Beautiful by Roz Dineen Before Dorothy by Hazel Gaynor 3 recent addictions: Anton Berg’s Dark Chocolate Sea Salt bars Chewy strawberry balls Fresh fruit 3 things on...

A CONSTANT TO-DO LIST

I survived an earthquake today. To be completely honest, even though at the time I DID actually think “was that an earthquake?!” I wasn’t actually sure I hadn’t just hallucinated the slight shiver the world gave, and didn’t think anything of it until Karin sent a message to our family chat asking if we knew there had been an earthquake. I was walking through the hallway to the kitchen when I felt it, and almost immediately dismissed it, since it lasted literally about 2 seconds. I looked out the kitchen windows as I entered the room and saw the neighbor...

THERE’S A LIST FOR EVERYTHING

New things I’ve learned lately how to play and appreciate Sudoku, photo editing using neural filters in Photoshop, how to set and disarm our new house alarm Latest downloaded apps BoWelle, Everyday Puzzles, Merlin Bird ID Things that have made me laugh recently This commercial with Samuel L. Jackson for a Swedish energy company’s new snacks, conversations with my family while celebrating my birthday at Åben, a whole conversation about Theo’s love for licorice Things that made me happy recently painting pottery with Martin, Theo, Lisel, and her daughters, having what might have been the last lunch and gelato at...

NO ONE IS YOU AND THAT’S YOUR SUPERPOWER*

I’ve managed a lot of posts this month, and I am keeping at myself to sit down and write something even when I don’t, like right now, feel I have anything specific to write about. I don’t like most of the writing prompts I find online, as they feel a bit forced (what’s your biggest regret? What one thing do you wish you could do better? What superpower do you wish you had? Fuck if I know.) Lots of the writing prompts also seem to be for NOVEL writers, BOOK writers, SERIOUS writers, though I suppose if they need prompts,...

THREE THINGS

I was looking for journal prompts, but thought: O! I can write a list. That is always fun, because I love lists. I wrote “So, without further ado” to precede writing a three things list, but then I had to stop and google the word “ado”. We don’t use it enough! It’s such a handy word! Did you know that it can mean all of these things? Bustle and commotion, unnecessary trouble, delay or fuss; or worry and excitement. That’s a lot of weight for a little 3-letter word to carry. So, without further ado: three things! Three things still...

TO-DO BEE DO BE DO

Waking up super early has one advantage, though I could wish it was not the case since I’m HOME AND DON’T HAVE TO GET UP. Because I can’t get back to sleep, I figure I might as well get up and moving and shower and eat breakfast so I can start doing whatever it is I have on my to-do list for the day. You might think that I shouldn’t HAVE a to-do list while I’m on sick leave/vacation, but have you met me? I live for to-do lists. And oh my god, I’m getting so many things done right...

THE SHORT LISTS

Things that satisfy me: cars getting out of my way when I’m driving, making lists, crossing things OFF lists, purging unused stuff from my house, finding something perfect at an antique store, reading a new book by a favorite author, RE-reading books by my favorite authors, discovering a great new author, understanding jokes and puns in Swedish, knowing the answers to questions on På Spåret, reading new books with unpredictable endings, the clear signs that spring is on the way, rosebush explosions in our garden, a bumper crop of snap peas and cherries, remembering the exact right word for something,...

NOM NOM NOM

Things have been around a lot longer than you think. One of the links in the last enewsletter of the year from 1440 was to an article about food products and what year they debuted. I found it fascinating, though I’m not sure why. It starts with 1940, the year my father was born, and the year that York Peppermint Patties hit the market. The year after, when my mom was born, Cheerios came out (albeit under a different name at first), the “first ready-to-eat oat cereal made by puffing and shaping the grains”. Cheerios! We grew up with these...

RETROSPECTIVE

nd of the year retrospectives are fun to do. I’ve been writing them since 2008. I guess they appeal to the listmaker in me, and the OCD-me as well, because now that’s it been a tradition for 16 years, I can hardly stop now, can I? 2024 was a good year in many ways, judging by the family Xmas letter that I wrote and posted last week. Lots of travel for all of us, and I DID make it to Ireland, after dithering for a very long time between it and the south of France for my birthday trip. Karin...

I AM SWEET ENOUGH ALREADY, AM I NOT?

I can’t seem to quit sugar. I have no self-control whatsoever. UGH. Back in 2013 I stopped drinking soda cold turkey. I’d been a Coke addict since I was really young, often drinking multiple cokes a day. Coke was my THING. All our Swedish friends learned fairly quickly to have Coke AND ice on hand when we were over, neither of which is really Swedish. I stopped drinking soda because I had read somewhere that the amount of sugar in soda if you drank one can a day was equivalent to 20 pounds a year. So it was WEIGHT LOSS...
