LIVING IN THE MOMENT

*dusts off blog* Well, hello there! I’m not sure I remember how to drive this thing. I’m not even sure I can get it in gear… I haven’t posted since a couple of days before my mom arrived and the crazy month of crazy started. My brother and his family were here for a week then we had a week of party preparations and then we had a week of graduation insanity and parties, parties, parties. Then my mom left and now I’m suddenly left with one more day ahead of me before I have to return to my REAL...

A NEARLY PERFECT WEEKEND

This weekend delivered all the things that make spring in Sweden unbeatable. Pretty near perfect weather, with high blue skies, warm temps, and cooling, leaf-ruffling breezes scented with lilac. The sun shines until nearly ten, sinking slowly down through a pastel rainbow of lavender, blush and blue. The moon’s a silver sliver; the evening sky speckled with stars. A fat hedgehog trundled past the trellis yesterday evening, while we were watching ice hockey (which we’re doing again tonight, cheering on Sweden in the gold medal game of the World Championships. If they win it will be twice in a row:...

BEYOND RANDOM

Is there a word for thoughts so random that they defy the category of randomness? I feel like I have butterflies in my head. Not surprising, since my brain is basically full of either work (oh god, work work work) or TwoDots. I can’t do much at home most evenings and forcing myself to sit here for 10 minutes or more is an exercise is zoning out about how it starts hurting worse immediately. Onward to randomnicity! Randomopolis (where I live)! Randomalooza. We had 4.5 days off work for Easter. My daughter had a week off school. We had dinner...

RECIPE SCHMECIPE

I made a yummy dinner tonight, if I do say so myself. I don’t cook all that much anymore, because the amount of people that I need to feed has drastically reduced itself to…mostly me. Karin is so rarely home and Anders and I tend to just grab something simple for ourselves: soup, a sandwich, hotdogs (in his case). Some years ago, I got tired of cooking, too, and basically stopped. The kids were old enough to get their own damn dinners for a change and Anders cooks better than I do, and likes doing it, too, so I just…quit....

MAKING UP MEMES, I VERSION

I am really glad January is over. I’m not comfortable sharing really personal stuff online. I will always prefer reading books over watching television. I won’t try to change you, but I’ll probably judge a little bit. I want losing weight to be easier, and exercising to be more fun. I wouldn’t trade much about my life, except for the part where I can’t have a cat. I shouldn’t think so much about cookies. I couldn’t vote for someone I have little respect for. I can’t understand how some people think. It’s so hard to relate sometimes, even when I...

I DO AND DO AND DO

This has been crazy week. Something every single evening: Monday – WW, where I expressed disappointment that my scale at home in the morning showed I had lost more than the scale at WW in the evening and was told that “you can’t trust your scale at home”. Which? What? Why not, WW? SO YOU CAN GET PAID MORE? Give me a break. (it was because it was morning, that’s why, and I was getting ready to shower and hadn’t eaten anything, so there) Tuesday – AWC monthly meeting with 2 guest speakers and the annual holiday cookie exchange, which...

13 CONFESSIONS

Pizza is never on my go-to menu wish list. I really don’t understand people who think gun control will not help with the gun violence problems in America. I fear abandonment more than death. If you are driving under the speed limit in front of my car, I’m probably swearing at you under my breath. My oldest friend messaged me yesterday to say she was coming to London in March and wanted to plan a trip over to see me before or after and I literally squeed (squeeed? how many eeees does that word get?) out loud. I’m a hypocrite...

CLOSER

Ozswede wrote something that really struck me, today: “Sometimes it feels like I have sunk very quickly into the mire of old age because I do wonder where the time has gone. I think if there is any regret it is that I just don’t know where middle age went. I thought that middle age should be now, when there are big adventures and endless wonderings and wanderings. Too often I get to day’s end and think I have just slid one day closer to death.” Urk, that brought me up short, as too often I have the same kind...

PRESENT TENSE

Pursuing: tickets to next week’s Cirque du Soleil perfomance in Malmö Targeting: my disinclination to get out and walk Devouring: Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel Perceiving: faint calls from the cockatoo next door Dithering: whether to continue paying HBO Nordic after the first free month Continuing: never-ending laundry, even with one kid gone Consuming: Anders’ homemade Cheddar & Chantarelle quiche Recovering: from the annual crayfish party last night…fun, but SO tired today! Luxuriating: blue skies, warm temperatures, sunshine, puffy white clouds…last gasp Swedish summer? I’ll take it! Distracting: Two Dots, Instagram, iPad Cribbage Resigning: myself to 18 months in open...

A DAY TO RELAX IN

It’s another long weekend in the middle of the Swedish spring. We have a glut of them in April, May and June every year and then pretty much NOTHING until Christmas. This one is for Ascension Day, which is today. My company is great about holidays…we always get a half-day the day before and if the holiday falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday, we get the Monday or the Friday off as well. Next week is a regular 5-day work week but then we have another long weekend and a 3-day work week following. And then it’s only 2...
