It’s a beauty of a day today. The sky is piercingly blue with fluffinated, fluffoid, fluffanuffalous floating clouds. It’s warm in the sun and there’s a cool breeze. Yesterday was so windy that the tarp-n-tent that we had erected over the deck for Saturday’s party blew over, causing me to leap out of bed in the early a.m. to help Anders who was already outside wrestling with the beast. Today, the wind’s mom has obviously told it firmly to settle down and it’s amusing itself with little soft almost-autumn leaf rustles.
This weekend coming, we are going to plant the giant cherry tree which was one of the birthday presents I got on Saturday. Anders wants to plant it so we can see it from our bedroom window. Hopefully, next spring I can wake up slowly on a Saturday into a pink flowered-cloud morning. The thought makes me feel very Anne-of-Green-Gables.
I love autumn. It’s my favorite time of year. The only thing is that this year it seems as if I’ve had it all summer long. I’m not complaining, though, as I LIKE it when it’s cool, as long as it’s sunny. If I was in the States I’d be thinking about football and apple cider, but mostly I’m just wondering what I’m going to do about my power-walking when it’s dark by the time I get home. One of the other presents I got Saturday was a yoga/exercise mat, so I may have to just bite the bullet and start some indoor routines after the light begins to fail.
I’m supposed to take a salad to the regional planning meeting tonight, and Sharon dared me to figure out a way to include puff pastry…but I’m admitting defeat because I didn’t have time to get creative. I’m going to take a mozzarella-tomato-basil dish instead, because it sounds like it will be crisp and sharp and clean and yummy and also, not incidentally, easy to make and deal with.
Speaking of Pop Rocks: I just read that the inventor of Pop Rocks, one William A. Mitchell, passed away last month. He was 92. In addition to Pop Rocks, which he invented ACCIDENTALLY in the 1950s while trying to create a formula for an instant carbonated drink, he also held the patents for inventions that led to the creation of Cool Whip, Jell-O Gelatin and Tang. The world should mourn.
