SEE AND SAY AND…EW!

My brother arrived yesterday and after we picked him up, brought him home, fed him, and got things settled, Karin decided it would be the ideal time to start his Swedish lessons. She climbed into his lap in the big chair with her Barnens engelska ordbok A-Z (Children’s English Wordbook) and proceeded to go through the words with him, one by one, laughing and grimacing at his pronunciations. The books is divided into chapters by letters and consists of page after page of pictures with the English word under it and the Swedish translation written beneath that. There are about...

THIS THAT AND THE OTHER

Another Reason to Love Sweden: Today I went again to the pharmacy, to pick up the prescription I had dropped off on Tuesday. They had sold out of the medicine I needed that day so I had to come back. Because I had requested to fill the last 2 months of the prescription (normally, they only let you fill one at a time) due to the trip to the U.S., I had to show my travel itinerary as proof that I was actually going to be out of the country and therefore unable to wait. I had another reason for...

NOT GIVING PEAS A CHANCE

Why I Love the AWC: Because I can send out an email to the 123 members asking if there is anyone who would like to take 2 cans of Campbell’s Green Pea (shudder) soup off my hands and 5 minutes later get not one, but 2 responses that yes indeed, there ARE people out there that would be happy to have them. (update: FOURTEEN FIFTEEN people have responded so far) One of my colleagues was in New York last week, and while emailing about work, he offered to bring me back something…I asked about my disappearing shampoo, but he couldn’t...

TEMPUS FUGIT

10 years ago today I arrived in Sweden. Anders had gone ahead of me, arriving on New Year’s Day since he had to start work, and I was still at my parent’s house helping my mom deal with the aftermath of my dad’s death 2 weeks earlier. We went straight from the airport to the hospital to greet the arrival of his sister’s newborn baby, who celebrated his 10th birthday yesterday. 10 years! I didn’t know it would be that long. I have lived abroad for 16 years of my life now. 3 years ago I wrote a post that...

GOOD IMBECILE CAN’T BE FAR BEHIND

What do you say when you come into the office and see your colleagues for the first time each day? You say, “Good morning!” am I right? Sometimes you say it in a chirpy, perky voice (if you are not me) and sometimes you say it in a “wannamakesomethingofit” way and sometimes you slur your way through it, and sometimes you just abbreviate it: “Morn” as you walk by, open the door to your room or turn into your cubicle or hang up your jacket and turn your monitor on. In Swedish, “good morning” is God morgon but when it...

SO FAR AND NO FURTHER

Dear Week 38, What’d I ever do to you? You’re killing me and I’m only halfway. Cut me some slack, will ya? Kisses, Lizardek In Sweden, a lot of things are reckoned according to what week it is. I don’t know if that’s a common thing elsewhere in Europe or if it’s peculiar to Swedes. All I knew when I first moved here was that there were 52 weeks in the year, but I have no mental calendar to figure out what week it is on any given workday, after about week 12 or so. Thankfully, awhile ago I discovered...

GOURD YOU BE MINE?

I’ve never been a big fan of dried fruit, but O! dried pineapple chunks are SO GOOD. They’re better than candy. They’re like MAGIC candy! 30 days hath September…so far 12 of them are still blank on our calendar. eep! My brother reminded my family and I that it’s time to start the familiy Christmas wish lists so that everyone has time to get started. Little does he know I started months ago. muahaha! Massage tomorrow…mmmmm! thank goodness because my neck really, REALLY needs it. The woman who offered to coordinate our annual pumpkin patch field trip for the AWC...

STEREOTYPES TO THE RESCUE

3 girls in the senior class from the high school that our kids will go to in a few years sent a note home with everyone in Karin’s class announcing that they were starting a handball club for the young kids in Flyinge school. While they are primarily aiming at the 6 and 7-year-olds they made it clear that any child who was interested was welcome. Even better, they’re allowing the kids 3 sessions for free to try it out and it’s only 150 kronor for the rest of the term if they join after that. I asked Martin and...

SJUNG HOPP FADERI FADERALLAN LEJ

This has the been the eatingest weekend in ages. I’m stuffed. We had lunch today at a semi-fancy buffet place in honor of Ander’s dad, who turned 80 this year. (the party was postponed a bit from his actual birthday because they were out of town then). The food was fabulous and I had to FORCIBLY restrain my tongue (I gave it a good talking-to! haha) from trying to run rampant and just keep eating until there was NO MORE. Best pork fillet with rosepepper gravy I’ve ever had. Best apple crumble pie with vanilla sauce I’ve ever had. That’s...

WHAT A WONDERFUL FEELING, I’M HAPPY AGAIN

When a project gets its teeth in me, it’s as if I’m suddenly wearing blinders. I don’t want to pay any attention to things outside the narrow focus of my current obsession. Having to stop what I’m doing for other necessary or pressing demands, like feeding the kids or doing laundry or answering the phone, makes me grumpy. I want to keep on working on my project until I am done or until the obsession suddenly wears thin for a bit and I can slow down and swing aside and do something else (sometimes it’s another project! or 2 at...
