A DECADE OF MANAGEABLE GOALS

I don’t really do New Year’s resolutions as such, but every year when I write my Retrospective post, I write down what I think are manageable goals for the following year. I think exercise and healthier eating are on them every year, and I feel like I’m sort of just kidding myself with how seriously I tend to take that one, which is probably the most important one that’s always on my list. My weight has at least been hovering around the same place for nearly the whole last year and since I am still under the weight I was...

TRIALS OF A BIBLIOPHILE

Megsie tagged me a book meme on Facebook, which is kinda the only meme that I can’t resist. It’s posting 7 books you love for seven days. When you read as much as I do, it’s REALLY hard to only pick 7 books. Do you pick your FAVORITES? (Impossible to stick to 7, in that case). Do you stick to one genre? Do you play to your audience? Do you choose only newer books or only older ones? What if you like really quirky books or complicated books or Harlequin romances or you feel children’s literature is underrated and not...

I WRITE BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW WHAT I THINK UNTIL I READ WHAT I SAY*

When I get a little miffed that reading through my friends list and RSS feed takes me about 10 minutes these days, I have to stop and remember that I am part of the problem. It’s July 12 and I’ve posted only twice this month so far. This post, if it makes it up, will be third. Granted, it’s summer and and the weekend now, and everything slows down when it gets hot out, but really, that’s no excuse. If you want to read what’s out there, maybe you should be setting an example and encouraging others by writing something...

DOWN, DOWN, DOWN, THEN UP

We voted yesterday in the EU elections, but honestly, after hearing the results of elections all around the world, I wonder why we bother…I don’t feel like it makes any difference against the rising wave of nationalism, populism, right-wing rhetoric. Everyone I know expresses outrage and despair that the right-wing parties are gaining such ground, but SOMEONE must be voting for them. GAH. I really hope it doesn’t take a world war, climate explosion (beyond crisis) and a couple of generations to turn the tide again. Karin and I got her taxes done last week and I took them to...

IS THIS THING ON?

I used to live a lot more of my life online, in the blog world mostly, than I do now. Not surprising, since so very many people have stopped blogging for one reason or another. I find that weeks fly by and I don’t even think about it once, and when I do check my list of people to read I find it takes just a few minutes to scan through the time that has passed…maybe someone has posted something that takes longer than a minute to read, but it’s rare. And getting rarer, sadly.* It’s not exactly that I’m...

LEFT OF CENTER, PLUS POTATOES

Karin is leaving in the morning (really more like the middle of the night, since her flight from Copenhagen leaves at 6 a.m.) for Greece on a last-minute cheap ticket deal with a couple of friends. They are going to Kos, which I know nothing about, but the name was vaguely familiar, a brain-remnant left over from years of Humanities and Art History classes, one presumes. She came home after work to finish packing and requested “a nice dinner” so I had the inspiration to drive to Eslöv to an excellent butcher that we patronize on occasion and buy something...

LIVING IN THE MOMENT

*dusts off blog* Well, hello there! I’m not sure I remember how to drive this thing. I’m not even sure I can get it in gear… I haven’t posted since a couple of days before my mom arrived and the crazy month of crazy started. My brother and his family were here for a week then we had a week of party preparations and then we had a week of graduation insanity and parties, parties, parties. Then my mom left and now I’m suddenly left with one more day ahead of me before I have to return to my REAL...

A NEARLY PERFECT WEEKEND

This weekend delivered all the things that make spring in Sweden unbeatable. Pretty near perfect weather, with high blue skies, warm temps, and cooling, leaf-ruffling breezes scented with lilac. The sun shines until nearly ten, sinking slowly down through a pastel rainbow of lavender, blush and blue. The moon’s a silver sliver; the evening sky speckled with stars. A fat hedgehog trundled past the trellis yesterday evening, while we were watching ice hockey (which we’re doing again tonight, cheering on Sweden in the gold medal game of the World Championships. If they win it will be twice in a row:...
