POWERLESS BUT PUMPKINED

Yesterday was the blusteriest of blustery days. It was windy all day, with winds whipping the trees into a real frenzy. I worked from home both Thursday and Friday as I had been trying to beat a cold since earlier in the week and on Thursday morning it caught up with me. I stayed in bed for a few hours, and then felt better, so got up and worked. Since I was still pretty gunky yesterday, I stayed home again but felt okay enough to work a full day.

By the time Anders came home, it was really stormy weather though it hadn’t actually started raining yet. The storm was called Babet and it was a doozy. I went to the grocery store after I stopped working, and Anders did some work on the MG in the garage, and then came in and made dinner: delicious kassler and pineapple casserole, with fresh steamed asparagus. I talked to my sister while he was cooking, and after dinner, we settled down for an evening of mys and TV. We watched an episode of Fråga Lund, and were just about to continue watching The Bear, when the power went out.

AAGH. So we lit candles and turned off switches, and settled in for an evening of EXTRA mys with candlelight. Neither of us had full charges on our phones, so we were a bit worried about them going totally dead, but since the wi-fi was also out, we didn’t do too much online. I read my Kindle (a very good, very engaging book), and I went to bed just after my usual bedtime, as I was still snucky and fairly tired by then.

It was PITCH black in the house during the night, the few times I got up to go to the bathroom, and the winds were still raging outside. It sounded like a continuous freight train. But this morning, we woke to silence. No lights, no power, no hum of electricity from anywhere.

It’s a very weird feeling when there is NOTHING on in your house. It’s SO quiet. We still had water, and Anders was able to shower, which was good because he had to leave to go meet his sister, as they were going to spend a few hours at their uncle Ingvar’s place. He took the car as I had already cancelled my plans to meet Karin in Malmö for lunch and then thrifting with the AIC. The hot water was gone by the time I tried it, so I couldn’t shower.* I sent an email and SMS to all the people signed up, telling them that I wouldn’t make it, and then I settled in for a very quiet day.

The electricity company’s website didn’t give an estimate on power returning until much later in the day, and even then it kept getting moved back. First 1 o’clock, then 2, then 3, then 4. Karin came home around lunchtime. I had a sandwich and chips, and, happily, cold ice water, since my Yeti kept the ice I put in it frozen and the freezer was cooling down very slowly, so things were still okay. We left around 2:30 to go buy pumpkins for pumpkin carving tomorrow, and got back just after 3…to still no power.

Anders came home at 4 and just as we were telling him that the website had said 4 at the latest check, the power suddenly came back on, with lights turning on that we’d missing turning the switches off for last night. Very happy as I could heat up yummy leftovers for dinner!

Tomorrow the kids are coming home and bringing Olivia and Theo with them. We have 4 pumpkins to carve, as neither Olivia nor Theo have carved them before. I expect Martin and Karin will leave theirs here. I hope they don’t completely mold by Halloween!

*Well, I mean, I COULD have, if I wanted to shower in freezing water, but no thank you. Plus, I wouldn’t have been able to dry my hair, so brrr, no thanks.
