BOOKISH

What is it about sharing a room with a handful of other like-minded book fiends that makes me so incredibly happy? I LOVE book group. I didn’t even read the book, one of 2-3 times I haven’t done so in 4 years, so I didn’t feel too guilty, and the conversation was so interesting and went so many interesting places. The book was Beyond Belief by V.S. Naipaul, whom I just haven’t been able to get into despite 3 tries, but sleepyhouse made an excellent case for one of his earlier books that I’m going to look up. We had...

WISDOM

Alright, already same_sky, here you go. I don’t usually do stuff like this, but you got me thinking… 10 Things I’ve Learned: everybody is somebody else’s weirdo everything is better in moderation, including moderation nothing can make water better if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all the fruit doesn’t fall very far from the tree it doesn’t come to stay, it comes to PASS nothing is sacred and everything is opinion, including this what goes around comes around rudolf the red-nosed reindeer unsticks any earworm and doesn’t stick itself in a women’s club, the same 15...

CONTENTMENT IN SWEDEN

Interesting stats and answers from a “Contentment in Sweden” survey done by Parent Net Sweden, directed at expatriates: Read more here In one of the accompanying articles, a woman had this to say, “What I needed during my first years in Sweden was for someone to say to me, “It is really difficult to live in a culture that is so different from the culture in which you were brought up. It is natural that you are having a hard time.” Unfortunately, I never heard this; I was told by the people around me that I was obviously not doing...

GRUMP

I was supposed to have a red Alfa Romeo Graduate 2-door convertible by now. My life has veered, obviously.

SUSHI ROLLS

Cooking group was both a failure and a success today. We were supposed to be 5 people, but 2 never showed and didn’t bother to call, which I find inexcusable, unless I find out later there was blood and hospital visits involved. πŸ™ We had a ton of food leftover, therefore, but that’s okay as it was SUSHI. Martine brought the largest cucumber I’ve ever seen in my life. We made california rolls, spicy tuna rolls, cucumber rolls, tuna/mayo rolls, rolls with spinach, rolls with avocado, rolls with omelett and carrot and they were all GREAT. I’m a master at...

FAMILY TIES

When I went off to college, it was right after my family had moved back to the States from Germany, and none of us wanted to go home. We wanted to stay in Europe, but that was the beginning of the military downsizing and subsequent closing of bases, so my dad couldn’t find a job to stay at that point. We spent the summer sweltering in the unbelievable humidity that is Maryland, and then I left for MSU. I went home the first summer for 3 months, but after that I worked summers in the dorms throughout the rest of...

SATURDAY A.M.

Had a lovely sleep-in this morning which I do so appreciate πŸ™‚ Heard from my mom that my sister and her family are back from Isabel evacuation and all’s well, despite no power (with a freezer full of food, so hope it comes back on soon) and a tree down on their car. This is slated to be an AWC work and collage book weekend, with sushi-making at cooking club tomorrow. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ …assuming I can tear myself away from the computer… ha!

GUILTY CONSCIENCE

Anders and I were on the phone together, while at work today, coordinating our calendars for the next 2 months, and as I gave him date after date to add, I kept feeling guiltier and guiltier. I’m not 100% sure why. But with choir every Wednesday evening, a club event nearly every weekend, and a club activity nearly every week, not to mention family things, and non-club commitments, I feel as though I’m gone from home A LOT. Granted some of the events are with family and/or spouse, but still. Anders has hockey-bockey every other week but it’s at 11...

SUCCESS

The scrapbooking/collage social circle was a success, despite the kindergarten feeling that galestorm commented on at one point πŸ™‚ My soup was good, and my dessert turned out fabulous! So much so that I have to share the “recipe” which I totally made up on the spot πŸ™‚ Liz’s White Chocolate & Raspberry Pillows 1 package smΓΆrdeg (dough) 1 box frozen raspberries (or use fresh, I couldn’t get them that day) 2-3 cups white chocolate chips (or cut up white chocolate bars) Grease a cookie sheet and preheat the oven to 200C. Lay out the dough and cut into 8...
