THE SITCH

It’s the last day of a 4-day weekend and Mors Dag here in Sweden. We had Thursday and Friday off for Ascension day and a bridge day, and it’s been a relatively quiet, very relaxing weekend for the most part…except for some major bummer stuff that happened on Friday. On Thursday, Karin came over with Brumma and we hung out on the deck in the sunshine and watched the birds. The weather all weekend has been very changeable with a little bit of everything, including a triple rainbow over Flyinge. We get double rainbows quite often but I think this...

BOOKISHNESS

I’ve had this list for a while, before we went to Rome, in fact, but I was waiting until I had finished writing about our vacation after our return. We had a bumper crop of recommendations for next year’s book group books: FORTY-SIX books to choose from. GAH. I actually hope that the organizer will cut the max to 3 per person in the future, because having to wade through a list that long is hard! And, of course, it narrows the chances of any of MY recommendations being chosen…which is what happened this year. Five excellent recommendations from me,...

MAY THE MAY BE WITH YOU

Yesterday, we celebrated Walpurgis Eve (Valborgsmässoafton). We’ve been celebrating it nearly all our years in Sweden at the home of Mats and Annelott about 45 minutes north of us. Mats builds a bonfire on the hill above their house in a stone-lined firepit, and we grill hotdogs and hamburgers and then sit around the fire and catch up and chat with a group of people that we mostly only ever see the evening of April 30, since they are more Mats & Annelott’s friends than ours. Last night, Mats’ brother Mikael and his wife Lene were also there, and they...

THIS THAT THIS THAT AND THIS TOO

OMG I am so lame. I have let FOUR entire weeks go by without posting a damn thing except in my head. Did you read all my mind posts? They were excellent…well-written, thought-provoking, funny, etc. If you didn’t you totally missed out. I’m pretty sure they disappear after 24 hours just liike a chapsnat or a toktik or a story in any of the bazillion social media platforms that have stories. Read ’em while they’re hot! Or not. Anyway, it’s been a day full of good things, and in addition to posting my daily list of good things on FB,...

PIE MAKES UP FOR EVERYTHING

OW. What is it with me and banging my head? Our stupid kitchen chairs, which are from IKEA, and which are quite old now, and which have had to be tightened/glued/fixed numerous times by my husband, constantly creak apart after awhile, and yesterday, when I pulled out my chair to sit down for dessert, my chair completely came apart, collapsing under me and sending me crashing to the floor. The back of the chair flew forward and smacked me in the back of the head. It hurt like the dickens, and I just sat there for several minutes, trying not...

CLEAR SKIES, CLEAR MIND

It’s the start of a long weekend, after only 3 days of work following Christmas vacation. Feels pretty decadent, especially considering how long I slept in this morning. I woke up at 7, and was very sneezy and stuffed-up, and at 8 I gave up and read in bed for awhile, before falling back asleep. I think it was my body telling me I needed the extra rest because I felt much better after I got up. Anders (who has been sick all last week) just got the results back from his PCR test: negative, so at least whatever he...

RETROSPECTIVE

t’s been another crazy pandemic year and it’s still ongoing so I don’t expect a lot from 2022 at this point. We are all managing to stay healthy, even though as I write this Anders is coughing. Both he and Karin came down with colds over Christmas week, but have tested negative multiple times and he’s at the very tail end of his. I am back at work as of Monday but it’s another short week, only 3 days, so a nice soft start to the year. Martin and I just finished the super hard jigsaw puzzle of a map...

EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD

One of my goals for 2021 was to walk a 5K every month in addition to the nearly daily walking I was already doing. My usual routes are either a double-helix around the neighborhood (approx. 1 kilometer), or a 1.5K zigzagging up the neighborhood and then over and around and down below the school, or a 2.5K which goes around the school, over into the village and all the way down the goats and back. It’s harder to keep up the commitment in the winter when the roads are icy, and they stay icy in our neighborhood for a really...

POST-HOLIDAY BLISS

It’s the day after Christmas, at the end of 2021. It was a good Christmas in many ways…the four of us back together and everything ready in plenty of time so no one was stressed. I had most of my shopping done by the end of November, almost all of it done online, and the last of the things I ordered arrived well in advance. Karin helped Anders with ordering stuff for me, so he wasn’t stressed out either, at least not that I could tell. 🙂 We did a big grocery shop for both Christmas eve and Christmas day...

BEGIN AGAIN

I can’t begin to count the number of times I think about writing here, and don’t. I can’t begin to count the number of times I think about calling someone I love, and don’t. I can’t begin to count the number of things I think about taking a photograph of, and don’t. I can’t begin to count the number of TV series and movies I think about watching, and don’t. I can’t begin to count the number of things that will never live on for posterity because they happen and I didn’t memorialize them in either words or pictures. Ah...
