WHEEEEKEND!

It’s the weekend, it’s Valentine’s Day, and it’s Sportlov. Last week is well left behind us, except for Friday, which went swimmingly. I had my yearly “development talk” with my boss, which my kids asked if I was getting graded on. Yes, yes, I am, I said, and guess what you little slackers? A PLUS PLUS. Ha! I bought little boxes covered with hearts and kisses and filled them with favorite candies for my family and when I got up this morning I found roses and dark chocolate cranberry bars in my place. 🙂 Anders laughed at the card I...

ARMCHAIR TRAVELER

It was a VERY blustery day today. We awoke to grey skies, rain spatters and windy windy winds. The birds were nowhere to be seen, no doubt hunkered down in the trees, and the feeders were both swinging in the breeze all day. Most of the leaves have been blown off the trees and everything is looking bare and ready for winter…except the green, green grass of our lawn. It looks better now than it did during the summer! Anders leaves in the morning for 4 days training in Italy and it’s a super busy week, so I might not...

TANGENTIAL

Things we talked about at Bookworms tonight, in no particular order: one woman’s new house renovation issues the same woman’s new job one woman’s imminent baby (she’s due in 2 weeks) c-sections one woman’s return to book group after the birth of her baby 2.5 months ago one woman’s news that she is 17 weeks pregnant smörgĂ„stĂ€rtas Kegels exercises women’s necks after 40 the fact that the image of yourself that you see in the mirror is actually reversed and not how everyone else sees YOU podcasts audiobooks one woman’s experience of running the NY marathon 2 weeks ago security...

BOOK LIST

Just like last year, I mentioned that over the weekend we got the list of recommended books for the next batch of Bookworm picks to choose from. Last time it was 31 books long, this year, it was THIRTY-SIX. I had originally sent in 5 recommendations (same as last year) but then Megsie recommended a book to me that I thought sounded perfect for book group, so I sent it in as well. Our organizer requested that we choose nine books and send in our picks by November 15. Never one to procrastinate when it comes to lists or books...

MORE BOOK LISTS? YES, PLEASE!

The organizer for our AWC book group sent out an email yesterday asking everyone to send in their recommendations for next year’s book list. We all nominate 3-5 books and then, after we get the whole list, we vote on which ones we want to read, and the top 8-9 chosen are the next batch we read. We still have three books left in the current list, so I actually think this is a little premature, but our organizer wanted to get the voting done before Christmas so people could include the winners on their wish lists. We are reading...

BIBLIOMANIAC

Picking lists of books is hard. I always hated that old question about if you were stuck on a desert island which 10 books would you want to have with you? The answer was, I thought, painfully obvious: Boy Scouts Handbook The Ultimate Survival Manual by Rich Johnson Practical Wilderness Skills by White Wolf Von Atzingen Living Ready Pocket Manual – First Aid by James Hubbard Fishing for Dummies by Peter Kaminsky & Greg Schwipps How to Survive on a Desert Island (Tough Guide) by Jim Pipe Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe That’s only 7 (all real books) but I’d...

IF YOU’RE GONNA DO A MEME, DO ONE ABOUT SOMETHING YOU LOVE

Which book has been on your shelf the longest? I don’t know if this question means the longest as in that I have owned the longest, or if it means a book that has been waiting to be read the longest. If it’s the first, one of the oldest books I have is a compilation of stories called Animals You Will Never Forget. I used to read it over and over, and if I remember correctly, so did my sister. I have most of the books I had a as child, at least all the hardcover ones I received as...

GOOD THINGS COME IN COACHING, ROLLED IN SEAWEED AND BETWEEN PAGES

I’m so glad tomorrow is Friday. I am working for the weekend. Loverboy references make me seem really young, don’t they? I suppose it doesn’t count that I had to google “working for the weekend” because I couldn’t remember who did that song? Baha. Tonight was bookgroup. In Malmö this time and I was stupid and booked my hair appointment, also in Malmö, about a block away from where I was tonight, yesterday. So I had to drive to Malmö twice in 2 days. On the plus side, Barky looks FABULOUS and I got to go to bookgroup! And before...

COLLECTIVISM

Yesterday, as we sat at the kitchen table eating dinner, we counted NINE magpies hopping about in the street in front of our house. That’s surely enough for a tiding. Or even a charm, which is one of the alternative collective nouns for magpies according to a couple of different websites I checked. A charm of magpies seems more fitting to me, since I think they are such charming birds. They’re so flashy and curious and bold. And big! Striking black and white with a brilliant flash of peacock blue that shines out when they spread their wings. They seemed...

GOOD STUFF

To say I read a lot is a bit of an understatement, but I don’t read as much as I could. There are always things to do, and sometimes, too, I find I can’t seem to sit still for long periods, so I read in bursts. I read when I go to bed, for half an hour, or an hour, or sometimes more, depending on how good the book is. But I’m always in the middle of a book. Half my head is always in a book, and even when I don’t actually have the book open in front of...
