EVERY POST SHOULD HAVE COOKIES & BOOKS

I just wrote down a list of every day between tomorrow and the day we leave for the States and nearly every day has something scheduled. I don’t feel ready for the holidays at all. I’ve barely bought any presents and we still have to figure out when to celebrate with Anders’ family…it will probably have to be beforehand, but it feels too early and I’m not ready! How will I find time to do Christmas cards and a Christmas letter and presents and then we have to pack! Eek! Everything is zooming along, every day zooms from start to...

AUTUMN BEAUTY & A BOOK DILEMMA

Most years, autumn here in southern Sweden is an afterthought. A quick flash through gold to brown and ashes! ashes! all fall down! Autumn is usually rainy, sodden, darkening and the leaves don’t stand a chance: they fall with the rain to lie in decaying circles beneath suddenly bare branches. This year, O! we’ve been blessed by cold, clear days and a long stretch of solid blue sky and flame-tipped, flame-topped foliage. The birches are golden, the maples are red, and everything else is in between: orange, pumpkin, crimson, amber, saffron, carrot, coral, terracotta, rust, umber, copper, bronze. Most of...

HOLES TO HEAVEN

When the sky is clear at night and pitch black, we can see millions of stars. We can make out constellations (though sadly, we only know about 4 of them by heart) and we can practically reach out and touch the moon when it’s clear. It’s so CLOSE. It’s so bright! The moon isn’t full tonight, but the air is clear as all get out, which it was today as well, after the heavy fog cover burned off just past noon. The sky was a translucent robin’s egg blue, all over, with no flaws and no clouds. The flags around...

GO GO GO GRABOTE!

Whoa! Where did the week go? Why does this always happen to me? 😀 As glad as I am to be back to regular routine, I think I’d managed to forget how it grabs you and speeds you along without giving you any time to get your arms and legs inside the ride. What with the crazy busy at work all day and some activity/errand/to-do every evening, 7 days fly by before I can take a breath and realize it’s the weekend again. And too soon, another new week. No wonder Christmas seems to be constant…it’s already the end of...

A LIBRARY IS NOT A LUXURY BUT A NECESSITY OF LIFE*

Out of curiosity, a few minutes ago, I checked the Excel sheet I use to keep track of my Library (wittily titled Library.xls) to see approximately how many books I currently have, and why yes! I DO keep an Excel sheet that lists all of my books. This surprises you? My Library spreadsheet lists all my books in order by author’s last name, and includes titles, whether or not they are paperback or hardcover, what genre they fall into, and what country they were published in. God knows why I thought I needed that last column. I faithfully add new...

PASTTIMES

Many times, when I am the one who is making dinner and there is something that requires wait time, while it’s baking or cooking, I will sit at the kitchen table with a book so that I’m nearby in case whatever it starts boiling over or needs foil to stop it from burning, or whatever. I made dinner tonight (oven-baked salmon with a new Abba feta-pesto ready-mix, rice and a veggie mix that included broccoli, spinach, snap peas, asparagus and haricot verts) and started a new book at the same time. At some point I got up to fetch something...

JUST ANOTHER MANIC …WAIT, WHAT DAY IS THIS?

Last week was crazy, this week is, if anything crazier. I feel like I go go go from 6:15 in the morning when the alarm shrills to 11:30 pm when I finally get my brain to turn off and actually fall asleep. Work is nuts, life is nuts. Am I nuts yet? It sure feels like it. Yesterday was supposed to be the only day that we didn’t have something in the evening, but it suddenly filled up with unexpected stuff and I did an excellent imitation of a chicken running around with my head cut off only I wasn’t...

ENTERTAINING MY BROTHER

I wasn’t going to post today because I didn’t really feel like I had that much to say, but my brother is stuck in a hospital room 3.5 hours from home with his wife, who is under observation to make sure her contractions have stopped, so they don’t have a 6.5-week preemie. They had just started their vacation when she started having the contractions and ended up in the hospital. He has books to read (in German) and a TV in the room (in German) but not much else, and Simone can’t even sit up so they’re pretty stuck. She...

TORTURE

Is there anything more agonizing to a rabid book lover than re-reading a huge long series of books that one loves in order to read the latest one in the series and finishing it only to remember that not only have all the story lines been left hanging but the next book isn’t even PUBLISHED yet? I’ve spent the entire weekend (with a few breaks for walking, showering, eating, laundry) immersed in reading. I feel like I’ve just come up for air. And now I have to start the book club book which we’re meeting on Thursday about and try...

SLEEPY SUNNY SUNDAY

The kids forced me to read 3 chapters of The Hunger Games to them today; no hardship since I want to know what happens next as much as they do. We only have 6 more chapters left: we’ll be done long before the discussion date which is set for October 13th. I suspect by then I’ll have been badgered into ordering the next 2 books and we’ll have read them as well. Karin has never been as much of a reader as Martin, but she gets excited by a good story, too. I don’t know that I would call this...
