WHAT A WAY TO START THE YEAR

I know some people believe that you will spend your year basically the way you spend the first day of it, but if that’s the case, I might be in big trouble. My day, so far, has consisted of: sleeping late, playing games, reading, listening to music, eating, watching DVDs with Martin, talking on the phone with my brother and calling emergency services to send an ambulance because I thought I might be, maybe, having a heart attack. Yeah. So not fun. I’ve been having really stabby chest pains for the past couple of days. They’re intermittent…they come on when...

MUSICALLY INCLINED

I never listen to the radio nowadays. I never listen to the more than 500 CDs we own, either. And since last year, the only tape player we own is a small boombox that is up on the top of a shelf… so I never listen to any of the mixed tapes that I made or received long ago, and haven’t for years. But I listen to music all the time. All day long at work and whenever I’m in the car. I’ve built a Spotify list with over 2000 songs on it and that’s what I listen to. It’s...

56 MINUTES OF FAME

The podcast interview is up! Chuck put it up late last night Seattle time, and I didn’t see it until this morning at work where, of course, I didn’t have time to listen to it. If you would like to find out just how interesting I am, click here! Note: the entire thing is just under an hour long, but I’m okay with you listening to it in pieces 😛 If you prefer, you can download the app for SoundCloud and search for ChuckSigars and find it there. Thanks, Chuck!

A LITTLE LESS CONVERSATION

My daughter told me that her boyfriend is coming over for dinner tomorrow and she adjured me that “this time, mama, you have to TALK to him!” She has a point. It’s not that I haven’t talked to him, exactly, but I find it really hard sometimes to initiate conversation. I’m not a naturally chatty person, though I bet people who have met me will be surprised at that self-assessment. But it’s true: I find it much easier to keep up a conversation than to get one going. And of the four of us, only Karin is a natural chat-initiator....

JUST THE WAY UH HUH UH HUH I LIKE IT

Totally got my relax on today, and it was a perfect Sunday for it. After a busy week of work with the majority of my colleagues on vacation, it was nice to have the downtime I needed. Karin carved the pumpkin on Thursday night and did a bang-up job of it: Then she decided to decorate the foyer into a mini-haunted house. She hung black plastic garbage bags from the ceiling to enclose the space and make it dark, put a skeleton on it, and hung spiderweb both inside and out. Some black candles and a big black spider and...

MOVING THINGS DOWN

I have to post something just to get the last post down out of sight a bit… I’m still thinking about it, worrying about it, and wondering how all that affects our AWC club account as well. Good thing I color my hair, or you’d see how much grayer Barky is from this stuff, in just the past few days. Bought a pumpkin today, a nice Halloweenie one, kind of tall. I told the kids they were in charge of carving it. We’ll see if it actually happens before Halloween on Friday. The neighbors sent out the letter about trick-or-treating...

NO EXCUSES

Did I mention I started walking again? Finally? Baby steps, really, but at least it’s progress. One of my colleagues, who is also a friend, is helping to motivate me, along with herself. It’s only 15 minutes after lunch, but it’s better than the big fat nothing which it’s been for far, far too long. We actually started 2 weeks ago… we managed 2 days, and then I got sick. And then she got sick. But now, no excuses, every day, even if one of us isn’t there and even if it’s raining, which it was today. There are a...

GOOD TIMES, OLD TIMES, FLYING(E) TIMES

Dang it, there went time again, flying. Every time I write the word flying now, I have to delete the e I automatically add to the end. Flyinge. (where I live, you know) We spent most of yesterday evening watching three old videotapes that Anders’ mom gave us when we were dropping her off yesterday after her appointment at the physical therapist (hers was after mine, my arm is MUCH better, thank goodness). She’s slowly cleaning out some of Einar’s closet junk and getting rid of stuff. One was a video Anders had made shortly after he moved downtown to...

ME TIME

We’ve had a week of those clear pale blue late summer days with scarce clouds, no breeze and the kind of warm temperatures that feel so good on your back and shoulders without making you break a sweat. Hot-air balloon weather. Apple cider weather. The leaves haven’t started turning yet, much less falling, so there are no piles to shuff through. The neighbor cat curls up on the sunny asphalt in the middle of our street where, thankfully, few cars come. It’s a lovely, long, alone evening for me: Anders still in Italy and both the kids away at overnight...

GOTCHA

Turning 50 is weird. I don’t FEEL like I’m fifty. I feel more like 35. 37, maybe. Max. Maybe younger, some days. On Monday, my boss sent me an email informing me that she had scheduled me for 1 hour today to train our newest team member, who started last week. “Can you please go over guidelines, logo, brand, templates, etc.?” she asked. I replied in the affirmative, no problem, since this kind of training is part of what I do. But jetlag the last couple of days has been kicking my butt, so I was really tired at lunchtime...
