RETROSPECTIVE

new decade commences! Tomorrow is the last day of 2019 and then we are heading into science-fiction year numbering. 2020 sounds so very futuristic! This past year wasn’t exactly as calm as I anticipated but we’ve made it through, anyway. Here’s to the Twenties: may they be progressive, innovative, nurturing, and full of good things, including (from my heart to God’s ear) a new President. Family & Personal Highlights of 2019 New Year’s with our friends Kathey & Russell and my mom in Michigan Keeping myself diabetes-free Trip to Lisbon with Debbie Karin’s 2-month trip to Costa Rica and S....

VACATION, SCHMACATION

It’s been a week of vacation and I’m slowly getting used to not working, though I’m still checking emails and our ticket system because holy crap we have a lot of work right now, and I feel guilty for being a slug at home while my teammates are buried. 🙁 It’s no fun being off when you fee like you’re leaving your team in the lurch. I actually went in to the office today for about half an hour because my boss organized a short julfika this afternoon. I brought cranberry-pistachio bark with me which was much appreciated. And I...

PHOTOS I DIDN’T TAKE OF THINGS I MIGHT HAVE SEEN

Four of them leaping, crossing the road from one side of the twilit fields to the other. Tails flashing white, they were gone into the dimness so fast I only had time to take my foot off the accelerator. I could only see the idea of deer, the bounding impression of them; headless, hornless, just a fading smear across my vision, safe to the other side. Earlier today, a rising of crows or perhaps, jackdaws. A black flapping into the trees. The things I see from the drive to and from work: storks stepping sedately, a couple of shine-eyed cats...

MY POWER’S TURNED ON

Caught in the work squeeze again and it’s getting me down. Even the free Fridays are only sorta kinda helping. Urgh. We’ve made a ton of progress on the bedroom renovation and are moving back in officially tonight, though it’s not 100% finished. Anders took last Thursday and Friday off and spent both days painting. On Saturday we went shopping and picked out a ceiling fan that works better with the decor than the previous one did (which is being moved to the living room). I spent a great deal of time putting dresser drawers together and we finished assembling...

I LOVE MY LONG WEEKENDS

I’ve taken all the Fridays in October off, and I’m really happy about it, though, to be honest, I could just as happily take all the Thursdays off as well. Except there is too much to do at work, so that would probably just be more stressful than not. We’re sitting in a really un-fun open landscape situation at work and it’s really getting me down, so I’m squeezing every moment of satisfaction and relaxation out of my weekly day off that I can, including rolling over and going back to sleep, reading a LOT, and getting things done around...

I CHEST WANT SOME NEW BUREAUS

October came whistling in over the weekend with wild winds, cold temperatures and lots of grey cloud cover. It’s COLD now. I’ve switched to my winter raincoat and a scarf is a must now. The trees are mostly losing leaves but some have turned…raggedy gold and brown. The bright red that signals autumn hasn’t struck since there haven’t been any frosty nights yet. With global warming, it may be a thing of the past here…I suspect the trees will be bare before the temps drop that low, anyway, at least at the rate the wind is whirling. Anders is in...

TAKE A LOOK AT YOURSELF AND MAKE A CHANGE

I seem to be on a Tuesday posting streak. I just looked at my calendar and saw that, with this post, I will have posted for 5 Tuesdays in a row. But the streak stops here, because I won’t be home next Tuesday, and I probably won’t be thinking about posting, because as of 4 pm this afternoon, I’m FINALLY on vacation! Only for 1.5 weeks, but whatever, I’ll take it. I didn’t mind working all summer, and I got a lot done, especially on projects I had no time to prioritize during the first half of this year, but...

SUMMER STUFF

It’s been borderline unbearably hot and humid here, for me, anyway. Anything over 25C and I’m wanting to move further north…though, according to one friend who lives VERY far north, it was just as hot and humid there, so maybe there is no escaping it. Today, however, though it was hot and humid throughout the first part of the day, cooled off considerably and it’s now a lovely chill temperature. Especially since I opened the front door to create a draft and now the house is under 20C for the first time in ages. It’s quite cloudy out and I...

IF THAT’S ALL THERE IS, IT’S ENOUGH

This morning, when I got into work, one of my colleagues commented, “Another day, eh?” and I responded, “Yeah. Sleeping, eating, showering, working…is that all there is?” “Pooping,” he responded. HA. True. Work’s been nicely slow the last couple of weeks, giving us some time to catch up and work on some of the projects we never have time to do. July is the month when most Swedes go on vacation, but almost my entire team is working right now, which is a little weird. I’ve been doing some of what is essentially döstĂ€dning lately. Just a little bit…a drawer...

MAKING A MOVE

I played two new (to me) games last weekend. I grew up in a game-playing family but there is less and less of that for me nowadays. Anders isn’t a game player, per se…I mean, he will play games if we do so as a family or host a game night or something but he’s not interested in them otherwise. My mom and dad used to play cribbage together in bed…I can just imagine the look on my husband’s face if I tried to get him to do that, haha! On Friday, I had dinner with Camilla and Debbie’s at...
