OBITER DICTUMING WITH A VENGEANCE

Topics of Discussion Between Martin & I During Our Evening Walks Yesterday & Today: Greek, Indian and Norse Mythology, Whether Trickster Gods are Good or Bad, Why Some Kids Are Bullies, Which Book to Read Next After Oz3, Whether Watching Harry Potter Would Scare Him Now Since Narnia Didn’t. I’ve always loved Greek mythology. I took several courses in it, along with Art History, during college, and still have several reference books on my shelves. I think my love goes back to a particular book (although it could just be because of Wonder Woman on TV when I was an...

HEART PARTS

Help! Help! I’m being oppressed! By cloud cover. Actually, it’s too thick to merit a thin, just stretched over top, short little name like cover. I’m being oppressed by cloud duvet. By cloud quilt. By cloud down comforter. It sounds very cuddly and warm, doesn’t it? HA! Sweden in January is anything BUT cuddly and warm, I assure you. Had another toss-and-turn, mostly sleepless night last night. (Have since heard, right here on my computer, that several of YOU didn’t sleep well either, what’s up with that? sympathy insomnia?) Anders didn’t sleep well either (and NOT because of any alleged...

BORK BORK BORK!

My friend brief_therapy has admitted that she can’t cook. She’s even gone so far as to PROVE it on a few occasions. So, another friend of ours, Marie ozswede MarthaStewart sent her a Cooking By Numbers website to help her out. I thought, HEY! That sounds like a good idea. You enter in the ingredients you have to work with that are currently in your fridge or your cupboard and it gives you recipes that work for those particular items. Cool, eh? Here’s my favorite. I told it I only had apples. Apple on its own – Serves 1 Ingredients:...

SECOND THOUGHTS

Most of my life I’ve been very capable at saying yes to the right things and no to the wrong ones. There are only a few instances that I can think of where I have truly not been able to answer correctly and act accordingly. That is completely aside from my ability to multi-task and my well-documented love of having an overfull plate and schedule where my life is concerned. This past year I made promises to myself to try and slow down, smell the roses, give more time to my family, take more time for myself, and not take...

IN OTHER WORDS

I’ve just started reading my second Ann-Marie MacDonald book in as many days, The Way The Crow Flies, and I am completely enamoured of her writing style. This second book is about an Air Force family in the early 60s and even though it is the CANADIAN Air Force and not the American one which provided my childhood label of “military brat,” it is already evident after only a few chapters that she has captured the essence of it completely. If you move around all your life, you can’t find where you come from on a map. All those places...

LOST & NEVER FOUND

April 27, 1979 (14 years old): Dear diary…My whole sticker collection is gone. It fell off my desk into the trashcan and I never noticed. I’ve been collecting stickers for 5 years and they’re all gone. God, it hurts when you lose something like that. Now I have to start over again. HAHAHAHA! Do you remember forever the things you lose? I had forgotten about those stickers until poking around in one of my old scrapbook/journals this evening, but there are other items I have lost, sold, misplaced or loaned with no return that I still remember and wish I...

POLAROIDS FOR POSTERITY

With Great-Grandma Beebe, January 1965 Is that a smile, Mom, or a grimace because carsick-baby is about to puke all over you? April 1965 during a roadtrip from Lake Tahoe to Reno, Nevada

WINTER WALKABOUT

It’s snowing in Hunneberga, but not in Hammarlunda or Holmby, nor at home. My boots are slightly too big. My feet slide a little bit inside as I walk, forward and back. By the end of my half hour roundabout they will have had a thorough falling-out with my socks who will have slouched and slid down and made annoying little ridges under the arch of each foot. My big boots make a crumping noise on the crushed crystals of the frozen snow. It’s dark but for the puddled glow of the streetlights, strung like beads along each path and...

NUMBER OF BRAINCELLS REQUIRED

to realize it’s the alarm going off in the black hole of morning: 1% to realize it’s the alarm going off AGAIN and make a flapping motion in the correct direction to make it stop: 1% to stumble up from bed, collect clothing, shower, dress, makeup, transport children to daycare, wave goodbye: 1% to drive to work: 1% to hold conversations, check and respond to urgent emails, finish layout revisions on a 24-page brochure, create 2 HTML invitations, and a product page, send things to print, finalize and distribute 15 email newsletters successfully, move collateral inventory, create technical schematics, help...
