ADJUSTING MY SAILS

I’m sitting, rather hunched, in the rolling chair at the desk that holds the computer. I’ve been working on my blog book for 2010 and am almost finished with the last bit of editing: updating the table of contents and adding the page numbers. Then I can upload it to Lulu and order a printed copy and the row of little green books with my name on them will lengthen by one more. As soon as I typed the word hunched, I straightened my spine and heard it crack with three small pops. I try really hard not to sit...

IT WOULD BE AN UPDATE IF I WAS ACTUALLY UP

We went to see Tangled tonight, partly because I’d been “boring” all day and Karin and Sydney and probably Martin, who didn’t actually say so, like his sister, who reiterated it several times, were BORED, MOM, and because I had forgotten all about Melodifestivalen starting this evening, but I think we got the better end of the deal because the movie was AWESOME. I admit to having a really soft spot for Disney when they get it right, and with John Lasseter, they REALLY get it right. At the end of the movie, we stayed to watch the end of...

MOOD SWINGS

Good: Surprising my friend Geena at her surprise wedding on Sunday, and getting to be a part of her special moment Bad: Insomnia Good: Praise for a presentation I put together and a brochure layout I’m finalizing Bad: Stressball workdays Good: Finding out at the allergist that I might not be allergic to cats anymore…at least according to the “pricktest” (which is what they call it in Swedish), though I would have to have a bloodtest done for conclusive results Bad: Anxiety dreams about work Good: Results from last week’s mammogram: nothing to report! Bad: Realizing that I had a...

IF YOU PAY PEANUTS, YOU GET MONKEYS*

Karin is obsessed with earning money right now…she wants to earn enough for a Playstation 3, which we’ve refused to buy, since we already have a Wii and PC games galore and they each have DS to boot. We had a Playstation 2, bought used from a friend of ours, for awhile 2 years ago, until it broke, but I already feel like the kids spend enough time playing games on the various screens in the house (including their phones) and don’t see the need for yet another game console. A couple of years ago, we decided it was time...

WE DON’T NEED YOUR STINKING MONEY!

It’s just been kinda sorta not exactly but almost one of those days: waking with a headache, slapping the snooze button in my sleep, getting up late, stressing at work, having my worst fears confirmed about the move to open landscaping (not even by a window), but hey! Barky looks FANTASTIC. Haa! I called yesterday to the sushi place that I picked for the AWC sushi night on Friday, to book a table. There were 20 people signed up. TWENTY people! That’s just crazy! I had tried to call the day before but they have opening/phone hours between 5 pm...

DECISIONS, DECISIONS

Honestly, I don’t know where the times goes. I could have sworn I just posted but when I look at my little calendar I see it was last Tuesday! 5 whole days ago! And I suspect it will be another 5 days before I post again as this week is just NUTS. I have something scheduled every day, beyond the usual work work work. Tomorrow we have Parent Meetings at both Martin and Karin’s schools, so we can’t go together. I’m going to Martin’s, and Anders is going to Karin’s, but I really wish we could both get the same...

IT TAKES GUTS TO GET OUT OF THE RUTS

I forgot to make note of my moved-to-Sweden anniversary until I was reminded by blue_eyed_girl‘s post today. I moved here on January 11th, 1997. Anders has already arrived a week earlier and the day before I got here, his sister had a baby boy, who celebrated his fourteenth birthday last week. Crazy how time flies. With the 14 years in Sweden and the 6 years I lived overseas as a child, I’ve now spent 20 years of my life overseas. I figured out in the car on the way back from the birthday dinner for Henrik that in another six...

TORTURE

Is there anything more agonizing to a rabid book lover than re-reading a huge long series of books that one loves in order to read the latest one in the series and finishing it only to remember that not only have all the story lines been left hanging but the next book isn’t even PUBLISHED yet? I’ve spent the entire weekend (with a few breaks for walking, showering, eating, laundry) immersed in reading. I feel like I’ve just come up for air. And now I have to start the book club book which we’re meeting on Thursday about and try...

WRITING IS MAKING SENSE OF LIFE*

There’s been some speculation out there, wondering whether blogs are dying. They’re so 2010. Maybe it’s just mid-January slump. I know THIS blog isn’t dying. It’s too important to die and it’s going nowhere unless I do, and I have no plans to disappear. It’s been awhile since the question of why I blog has been raised, though the answers remain the same. Important, you say? How could this blog be important?! What cheek! Yes, indeed: it IS important. What I’ve gained from this online journal, this interwebby rambling, this obiter dictum, is immeasurable. Friends, family, community, posterity; a place...

TIDDLY BITS

Last day of sluggishness wasn’t very sluggy, though it got off to a sluggy start with a major sleep-in. Asked Anders to take an hour out of his day to purge clothes in our closet and he went bananas and filled 8 big paper shopping bags and a giant black garbage bag with discards. Whoa! Organized MY side of the closet too, clearing out some tops I never wear and putting things in order. I don’t switch back and forth between winter and summer clothes, but I do keep the hanging items organized by type: sleeveless, short-sleeve, long-sleeve, sweaters. A...
