PORTRAITTY

When we are in the States I usually schedule a time for us to have a family portrait taken at Sears, since it’s so much cheaper than most of the photo studios here in Sweden. This year however, when my mom called, the price was nearly 3 times what it was the last time we were there 3 years ago (!), so mom checked around and got a recommendation for a local photographer from her massage therapist and booked a time with her for the first week we were home. Katie and her husband run their photography business out of...

JIGGITY JIG

Being home after weeks away makes me feel like jigging, though I don’t actually know how to jig. I assume it includes planting your fists on your hips, arms akimbo and kicking your legs scissory from under your tartan but I may be getting confused with a reel. It wouldn’t be the first time. Spring is far more advanced here than it was in either Michigan or Massachusetts. I didn’t sleep on the atlantic flight at all, choosing instead to spend more than half the flight absorbed in movies I would probably never have gotten around to seeing. The first...

AT HOME WHEREVER I FIND MYSELF

Tomorrow it’s time to return. Back to real life (and my hair’s evil twin Barky). Back to family and work and routines and the life that fulfills me and makes me who I am. Back to “home,” though I’ve long since given up being able to define “home” with a specific location. Home is where the heart is, they say, but my heart is all over the place. What an unexpected and welcome treat a month in the States has been. After 3 years away, it was all new again and big and overwhelming and bogglingly expensive and full of...

WEEKEND IN PARADISE

I know now what I want to be when I grow up. Honestly. The very best thing about blogging is the people that you meet. It’s a fact that kindred spirits really do exist and though they may live halfway around the world, you can befriend them and learn to know them and maybe, if you are lucky and a little stalkery persistant, actually bamboozle them into opening their home to you for a weekend. They may even provide food! They may even COMPLIMENT YOU ON YOUR HAIR. My mom and I drove into the veritable wilderness a few hours...

SOME SPEED WITH A DASH OF ANTICIPATION

I like going fast. I like driving fast (at least, faster than I should, though I don’t like going TOO fast, because that triggers my control issues) and I like working fast. I read fast. I type fast. I eat fast. (which I’m told is not a good thing) I respond quickly in conversations with snappy comebacks. I make snap judgements sometimes. I don’t live in the fast lane, though. And I have never fasted in my life, though I understand it can be quite cleansing. I have no idea why I wrote all of that. It just came out....

PRESERVING RANDOMNESS

Even though we are “in Boston,” we are technically about 45 minutes north of the city, and so far what I have seen of Boston is limited to the skyline at dusk and the airport. We plan to meet up with e11en on Sunday downtown so we will be able to finally see something OF Boston. We would have gone some evening this week to see something of Boston, but hello horrible weather, we’ve been living through a real live nor’easter here and it’s been raining cats and dogs all week. Feels just like home, though my children informed me...

ONCE FOR YOURSELF AND ONCE FOR YOUR CHILD

I said, I don’t know how to get started again. I don’t know where to begin. It seems so trivial to just write a diary-log of my days, what I did, where I went, what I bought. What I ate. It’s more fun and it means more to me when I write things that seem to reflect the inner surface of my shiny and distracted brain. Things that I want to read about when someone else writes them. Things that make me smile or think or go “huh, that was cool.” My mom said, write about your family. Write about...

HAPPY HAPPY

The air here smells right, the water here tastes right. My body remembers Michigan. There are red-breasted robins and grey squirrels and black squirrels in the yard. There are 2 pairs of cardinals flitting around. There are deer walking through the woods…the snowy woods. We have been shopping 4 of the 5 days we have been here, for clothes, for books, for CDs, for food, for STUFF. We have been to a hockey game and our presence meant that the Detroit Redwings won 3-0 (we have the Magic Power). We’ve had our pictures taken and we’ve been up at 4...

TRAVELING ON APRIL FOOL’S DAY

After a long, exhausting but uneventful trip, 45 minutes in the Customs & Border Protection line, a claim form filed, several increasingly upset calls to the delayed luggage call center, a return from the automated phone line from hell that kept dumping me out with a busy signal after keeping me circling for an infinity of “Press 1 for…press 2 for…”, a shopping trip to provide a change of clothing and toiletries for all 4 of us, and nearly 48 hours of worry, our 4 missing suitcases should be arriving some time this afternoon.
