PINKEYE!

Well, Martin’s eye infection is serious enough to keep him out of school for at least one day, possibly two, so I’ll be doing my web surfing from the comfort of my own home tomorrow. He’s had 1 red eye* with lots of goop for 2 days, but since he was fine otherwise, I didn’t really think anything of it and sent him to school yesterday and today. One of the teachers gave me some flak about it this afternoon when I picked him up so we went immediately over to the school nurse and she confirmed that he was probably contagious and had to stay home for 2 days. I talked her down to 1. I figure he’s been at school for 2 days with it already, so he’s already infected everyone, so why bother, but apparently they don’t feel the same way. Odd.

I was completely ticked off this morning as when I arrived to drop Martin off, 10 minutes to 8 a.m., there was not a single adult to be seen ANYWHERE on the giant school yard milling with children, ages 6-15. Argh. I went in and found Martin’s teacher, way down the hall, not even in the classroom where there were another 5 unsupervised children, and asked her WTF, and she said there ought to be someone out there and then promptly disappeared. I went back out and looked around again: no adults. 🙁 This is not the first time and it really upsets me. I do not feel comfortable leaving my 6-year-old with no supervision, even for 10 minutes, without being able to let one of the teachers know that he is there. I don’t care if this “safe old Sweden.” They’ve told the parents that an effort has been made to always have 1 person out there in the mornings, but reality is a far cry from the promise.

/end rant

I’m feeling full but not overly stuffed, due to my idiocy extreme foresight in eating a small dinner before going out to Julbord tonight. I didn’t mean to do it, but I was on autopilot when I came home. Left work, ran errands, picked up kids, detoured to the school nurse, got home, fixed dinner for them, fixed dinner for me, left to pick up the babysitter, headed into town and realized halfway there what I’d done. DOH. So I didn’t eat nearly as much as I might have, which was a very good thing. They had a wonderful spread as usual, and the fish soup, with huge chunks of perfectly done salmon and lots of saffron and cream was absolutely out of this world.

Sharon told the most hilarious story about one of those road-trip games where you go back and forth with your opponent trying to name everything you can think of in a particular category, and in this particular case, the category was cheese, and they went back and forth for quite some time naming all the cheeses they could think of (no repeats allowed) until they were really having to grope to come up with new ones at which point her friend said, “Helvetica!” and Sharon, after a few seconds, said, “That’s not a cheese, that’s a typeface!” Since I had just read an excellent article today about Arial stealing Helvetica’s thunder in the typeface world, this really hit my funnybone, and I laughed my head off. You might have had to have been there. 🙂 I’m a typography geek, I admit it.

That’s not a cheese, that’s a TYPEFACE, Jim! hahaha! It does sound like something Bones would say. Or maybe Batman.

*It’s not really pinkeye, it’s conjunctivitis, which is roughly the same thing, I suppose, to a slightly lesser degree, but CONJUNCTIVITIS didn’t make nearly as catchy a subject line.
