PERFECT DAYS

This has been a nearly perfect long weekend. Perfect weather, perfect amount of things to do, perfect amount of sleeping in. There was sushi and sunshine and summer flowers. A not-too-long to-do list with almost everything checked off and then some. Time with family and time to myself. One book finished and another begun. And an anniversary to celebrate. The yard looks beautiful, well, at least it looks, like Martin says, as if someone cares about it. Anders clipped the hedge and pulled all the long grass and weeds from around the cherry tree and set a ring of stones...

FULL OF WONDER

As always, in the spring, all the gorgeous colors and blooming madness everywhere make me grab for my camera. I notice, especially when driving, how much closer in everything is…the horizon is harder to see, grass and fields and trees hide the far corners of the sky. The bones of the world are covered in greenery and it’s all so THICK. Usually I prefer photos of people, and I’ve taken some of those too, but I wanted to gather some of the flower photos here, a pictorial paean to spring. The horse across the ditch got curious when we were...

IN BRIGHTNESS

The air is full of flying, floating things. If it were winter, I’d suspect snow but since it’s a beautiful, hot, late-spring day, a closer look tells me most of it is dandelion fluff or maybe milkweed puffs. They move with seeming purpose, skimming sideways, caught on every waft of air. Some ARE actually moving under their own power—insects: butterflies, gnats, tiny beetles, spider younglings, the small flying lives that populate the world, mostly unseen until the sun illuminates their journey. The air shines silver on the tops of the green hedges. Trees, even the lawn shimmers under the force...

IN THE MIDDLE OF MAY

Karin stayed home sick again today: another sore throat. She missed two days of school last week, and I suspect she’ll be home tomorrow, too. She’s zombied out on the couch, didn’t even wake up for dinner, so I know she’s REALLY not feeling well. I took her to the clinic this morning, because after she said that her throat was hurting really bad and the glands were really swollen I thought, what the hell? and printed out the absentee record. She missed 6 days of school in the last 20 weeks, 7 if you count today. All for sore...

WALKING ON SUNSHINE

So far, this has been an absolutely wonderful and relaxing long weekend and there’s still the rest of this evening and all of tomorrow to enjoy of it. Karin is up in Gothenburg, participating in the Future Cup Invitational, as goalie for her team. They are playing in the semi-final game tonight, but we can hopefully keep track of the match progress live on the website. They won their first 3 games and she only let in one goal, so she was sounding quite happy when I talked to her a couple of hours ago. Yesterday, we had some good...

SPROING!

The willows are pollarded The fields are plowed The trees and bushes are no longer see-through The buds are opening The butterflies are fluttering The equinox is upon us The light is lengthening The windows are filthy And I can see every single damn dust bunny in the entire house! It’s here!

SWINGING BACK

I know what my problem is. I keep focusing on the negative. The negative LOOMS and it’s ZOOMS IN, and it kind of takes over if you let it. it’s really, really easy to let it, I’ve found. So, today, I spent some time focusing on the positive. I saw a huge hawk with beautiful markings on the undersides of his wings hovering in the air over the road as we drove by. I saw the look of terrified delight on Martin’s face when he realized he was up to 60 on a country road when we were out practice...

LOOKING FORWARD, LOOKING UP

The past few days and nights have been below freezing, but that clear chill kind of cold that is perfect winter weather…ice crystals and blue skies and dragon-breath. It’s been perfectly clear, no clouds at all, even at night and the night sky is as black as pitch. The stars sparkle against it like they’re diamonds lying on velvet. Orion is slumped so far to the left that he’s practically somnolent. When I take the dog out for one last round-the-block walk, the grass crunches under our feet and the street sparkles in the light from the street lamps. We...

BLUSTERY

The 10-minute drive home from work was exciting to say the least since we are in the middle of a class-3 storm and it was already in full gale-force mode as I left the building. All day the rain beat down and the clouds powered along and the sun came out at intervals for as if for half-hearted reassurance. There have been a few “tornado-level” storms in the nearly 17 years I’ve lived here. One ripped the corrugated plastic roof off the porch of our old house. One knocked down a zillion trees on the hill up to Dalby, and...

ALL DISTRACTIONS WELCOME

I’m all aggravated this week, my shoulders up around my ears and shooting pain down the muscles of my neck. Work is making me crazy or rather certain someones with no real way to resolve the issue. Thankfully tomorrow is Friday and while I’m not exactly GLAD that my family is going away for 3 days without me, I can’t deny the idea of 2 days of absolute peace-and-quiet slugville are quite appealing at the moment. QUITE. Have fun, y’all! Don’t let the door hit you on the way out! I read a sad book and it made me cry....
