OPPOSITE OF SLUG

If I was away from LJ for several days some years ago, it could take me hours to scroll through and read everything on my friends list and RSS feed. These days, it’s a matter of minutes. Nice on the one hand, but sad on the other. It’s been a busy weekend in the middle of 2 busy weeks at the beginning of a busy month. On Friday I went to see Top Hat at the Malmö Opera House with my friend Debbie. She and the Wonders had given me a gift certificate when I had that big birthday a...

WELL VERSED

My cousin Cate jokes about Inappropriate Movie Night which she’s ended up at more than once, taking her young daughter along to a film that turned out to be…more adult than she had bargained for. Anders and I have accidentally had the same thing happen to us more than once ourselves, getting all excited about showing an old film for a Friday night family myskväll that we remember as being great (and that usually WAS great), but which turns out to be…more adult than we remembered. A Fish Called Wanda, for example, which both my kids still cite as a...

THINGS TO DO IN A QUIET HOUSE WHEN YOU’RE ALONE

Sing out loud. Warble. Yodel a little bit. Talk to yourself. Wander through the rooms and touch things. Pet an old teddy bear on the head. Make note of things that need to be done, now that you suddenly have the chance to SEE things around you without any whirling chattering children filling up your senses. Read for uninterrupted hours. Watch a movie that doesn’t have any superheroes or superpowers or animation in it. Lie on the couch and stare out the window. Get messy with craft stuff at the art table. Organize a cabinet or a closet. Put things...

SUNLIGHT INJECTION DOES WONDERS FOR MOOD, STORY AT 10

Slow grey headachy start to the day, but halfway through, the sun came out and my mood started improving, so much so that I feel like bouncing around and singing silly springs songs. Good thing my kids are already in bed so they can’t expire of embarrassment. The other day when I came home and started making dinner, they were lying around the living room with their two favorite friends, watching The Simpson’s (which…I’m of very mixed feelings about this. Not appropriate, I think. What do you think?) and while I was banging dishes about and slamming the microwave door...

WHERE WORDS FAIL, MUSIC SPEAKS*

Just the kind of day I needed after the week I’ve had. Waking at my own pace to frost and sunshine, puttering about, reading a bit here, cleaning a bit there, not really doing much of anything. Looking through Lego boxes with Martin to find all the different Lego people heads we have (41!), and having a delicious dinner of sushi out and then Melodifestivalen LIVE at Malmö Arena! There wasn’t anyone on the line-up that I cared all that much about, so I could relax and enjoy the show without thinking too much about it. It was quite different...

FA LA LA!

What a long day this has been! In fact, what a long weekend! I’m really looking forward to vacation now. 5 more days! 5 more days! 3 more choir Christmas concerts today for a total of 7 (I missed 3 others which were during work hours or it would have been 10 total) and now I’m free from choir until the end of January. The 3 performances today were at 2 different elderly care homes in Malmö; the second one we sang in 2 different departments. It’s kind of funny, the reactions we get from the people living there. Some...

THE HORROR!

The post I was planning to write tonight got sucked out of me by the execrable awfulness of the Eurovision Song Contest Semifinals. I was transfixed. Brain scrub, stat!

A FEELING THAT EVERYTHING MUST END

I found out yesterday that something I’ve been fearing for awhile has come to pass: our choir leader is moving on after the end of this term. I think it’s been a long time coming, and it seems to be a common propensity of choir leaders: the urge to move on after a couple of years, whether from boredom or being too busy with other things or feeling like they just can’t develop any more where they are. Kind of like being a military brat, I think. 3 years in one place is about the limit. I’m really sad about...

HOW I WONDER WHERE YOU ARE

We borrowed a nearly full-sized eletric keyboard from my friend Debbie for Martin to practice on for the next several months while he’s taking piano lessons. I brought it home late last night and set it up on the dining room table.* Martin headed straight for it when he got home from school. It has 99 song and style settings, allowing you to change the pitch and sound-style of the keys to just about anything you can imagine except quacking duck. It’s got harp, polka, rock-and-roll, softbeat, tango, and honky-tonk to name just a very, very few. It rocks into...
