I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY

I think, because I’m on vacation and I mean REALLY on vacation, not doing a damn thing, pretty much, except turning my nights into day and vice versa, what with the staying up until all hours and sleeping in late, that it’s causing me problems on the writing front. When you barely leave the house (except that I DID leave the house, multiple times, today) for days on end, it means you don’t have all that much to write about, except the inner workings of your weird brain, and good god, who wants to hear about that? I mean, I...

DREAM ABOUT THE DAYS TO COME

I’ve spent the day relaxing and packing, for the most part. Even after talking to my mom and sister a couple of days ago as well as a colleague in the States, I still have no idea exactly what to pack for the weather. The forecast for the Boston area as well as Hartford, CT, where my sister is, jumps around all over the place temperature-wise. From 11-12 Celsius to 19 (!) to 3-4 at the end of the week. ยด I don’t want to fill up my suitcase with winter clothes, so I really hope that it doesn’t snow...

OVER AND OUT

I hate typing on little keyboard screens on iPads and iPhones and Kindles. ARGH. It makes me crazy. I have to re-type everything a gazillion times because my stupid finger hit the wrong keys EVERY SINGLE TIME. With touch-typing on a regular keyboard, I can backspace and retype without thinking about it, and nearly as fast. But on a stupid STUPID little tiny electronic virtual keyboard, it’s just SO FREAKING ANNOYING. I am really late getting to bed, so this is all the post I can manage today. Anders gets home tonight, but I don’t know what time…I hope it’s...

A LITTLE BIT OF THIS, A LITTLE BIT OF THAT

For some stupid reason, Martin’s school did not do individual school photos this year. Or else he missed the day and didn’t find out if there was a make-up day. I have heard from two other friends with kids his age that their schools didn’t do photos either. WTH? Now I have to find time to take him to a photographer if I don’t want to have a gaping hole in the parade o’ school photos that every child’s life (at least in the Western world) is not complete without. Warning: this post is going to be all over the...

PAVING THE ROAD TO HELL

Despite all my best intentions, I seem to be lucky if I manage to write a post once a week. I am so lame. We’ve been having torrential downpours here for over a week. Huge puddles of standing water in the roads, lakes in all the fields, and the ditch around our lot is running with water all day. We’ve had armageddon clouds and grey skies for what feels like forever. Yesterday, there was actually about an hour or so of sun right in the middle of the day when I went for my lunch walk, and today, it was...

FIRST WORLD PROBLEM OF THE WEEK

I can’t figure out if I should go to Boston and work the week BEFORE Thanksgiving week or the week AFTER with the assumption that I will be at my sister’s with my mom FOR Thanksgiving week itself. The trip is already approved by my boss with the week of vacation attached, and my family has grudgingly, though not without a far amount of grumbling on the part of the children, accepted my absence for Thanksgiving, which means moving our own annual Turkey Day celebration up by 1 or 2 weekends or down by 1 (which causes it to land...

SUMMER’S END, AUTUMN’S START

Weekends just go too fast where there are only 2 days to them. I can’t believe it’s already September. You know what that means, don’t you? Only 115 days left until Christmas! We already had a neighborhood child here yesterday, selling jultidningar. I don’t know if this is only a Swedish thing, or if it’s common across Europe, but every fall we get a couple of kids at the door who are going around with “Christmas catalogs” and selling the items in them. They get a small percentage of the money they take in. The catalogs are usually full of...

IDYLLIC

A whole week off at home and I almost don’t know what to do with myself. Hours of unplanned time. Leisurely swathes of luxury to read or nap or putter around the house. No plans. We leave on Saturday for 3 weeks and I am doing nothing much so far, about it. Oh, there’s a slowly growing pile of things on the dining room table and laundry in, but I’m not feeling stressed or rushed or panicked or worried…although I did have a bit of spaz-out moment last night when, talking to my mom, I realized I hadn’t written down...

PINTEREST

What is up with the tired? I come home from work and by 5 pm I am so tired I can’t keep my eyes open. If I sit down on the sofa, it’s all over: I wake up 2 hours later. If I power through and do things around the house, by the time 8:30 rolls around, I have to prop my eyelids up with sticks and they ACHE with tiredness. I’m not tired when I get up, even though I’m not sleeping all that well (too warm, too bright, gotta pee, whatever) I’m not tired at work. It’s just...

UPDATEY

My friend Russell sent me a message a couple of days ago asking if we could talk about Toronto via Skype that evening. “It’s getting close,” he wrote, “It’s only 18 days away.” !!!! And here I was thinking I still had 3 weeks! My list of things to get done before we leave suddenly leaped into hyperdrive. I have/had several other people with birthdays to deal with, starting with my daughter, who turns 15 on Sunday, my best and oldest friend Becky who shares the big birthday number with me on the 15th, my nephew Sammy who turns 3...
