PUTTING WORDS TOGETHER

Martin has to come up with 1-2 topics for essays to use for college and scholarship applications, but everything I suggest is apparently stupid, lame, pathetic, uninteresting and/or eye-rollingly bad. Some of the topic ideas I came up with in under 15 minutes: Growing up bilingual in a dual national home What watching TV shows with my mother has taught me How Tumblr has changed my outlook on life Places I’ve traveled to and which was my favorite and why My mom didn’t have to write a college essay or, how things were better before Having a conversation that doesn’t...

LIKE MOT-HAIR, LIKE SON

One good thing about text messages… your words don’t bubble into the air and nothingness and then you can photoshop an entire conversation for posterity. Even if posterity is rolling its eyes. Martin sent me a photo of one of his favorite actresses, Sarah Paulson, who is going to be on a spin-off of one of his favorite shows today. He’s blue, I’m gray:

HALF (& HALF) (WAY THERE) (ASSED)

We’re down to half the family this week, though with the amount of time Karin spends away from home, I might as well be living alone. Living da vida loca. Actually, living la vida aburrida, since my life is nowhere near all that crazy. Martin and I got up at 4:15 a.m. this morning. At least we LOOKED like we were up. We were vertical and moving, albeit slowly and with our eyes squinched shut. I kept waking up all night long, checking the clock, with that fear of sleeping through the alarm that I often get before I’m going...

PRETTY PURPLES

I was smart; I stopped by Sularpsfarmen yesterday on the way home from work to buy pansies because I knew the weather forecast for the weekend was for nice weather and I knew Flyinge Nursery and Sularpsfarmen would be PACKED today and tomorrow. We’ve had several days of unbelievably gorgeous weather: 72 and sunny. California weather! One of the brothers helped me by carrying two bags of dirt to my car and I filled and purchased 2 flats full of pansies to boot. 24 pansies to a flat. I figured that ought to be plenty for my pots, right? Wrong....

HISTORY NEVER LOOKS LIKE HISTORY WHEN YOU ARE LIVING THROUGH IT*

I don’t know if you know that Martin has a blog. He doesn’t write on it, as it’s a Tumblr blog. He does photo-editing and puts together collages and GIFs of things he’s interested in. Mostly, up until now, it’s been a lot of American Horror Story and a couple of other TV shows that he watches. But about a month ago, he started a really cool project, with the plan to launch it on his Tumblr. He put together a collage…a huge one. A historical timeline of the 20th century illustrated by what he considered one of the most...

WHERE’D THE WEEKEND GO?

Anders made dinner tonight and it was so delicious that I’m sharing the recipe. He has been using an app he found called Kokaihop (there is a website too, but it’s all in Swedish) which is chock full of fantastic recipes and this is just the latest. Pasta with Garlic & Crayfish Tail Sauce 1 package of crayfish tails in brine 3 dl creme fraiche 1 bunch parsley 4 cloves garlic 1 cube vegetable bouillon 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper 400 gram tagliatelle noodles 1 TB olive oil 0.5 dl water Cook pasta according to directions while making the sauce. Peel...

WORDS, MORE WORDS, SOME MARTIN, AND MEMORY

It’s so quiet round these here parts, with half our family gone for the week. I’m sure Martin is loving it: getting to sleep in and play WoW as long as he likes without having to wrestle his sister for the computer. He doesn’t get to wrestle me for it, because if I say I want it, I get it. Snap. Last Friday I bought season 5 of Downton Abbey (which I’m pretty sure I have typed as DownTOWN Abbey every single first attempt at typing it, ever) and we are already done, plus we found the Christmas special online...

HOW IT WAS THEN

It’s official, I’m addicted to Quizup. What is it about iPad games that is so alluring? It’s probably just because I miss playing Trivial Abuse Pursuit with my family so much. I tried to get Karin to play with me and she promptly challenged me in World of Warcraft. *rolls eyes* I forgot to mention that Martin was elected co-editor of the IB school newsletter. He’s been a staff writer this past term and then decided to apply for the editor job. It was 3 people, and he and one other girl got the job. He had to answer a...

TREASURE HUNTS

I probably wrote about these back when we were doing them, but I was cleaning our bedroom today (spring-cleaning! in the winter!) and found this little stack of tiny notebook pages. Upon further investigation, I realized they were the treasure hunt lists that I used to make to entice Martin to go walking with me. We’d walk around Flyinge with this tiny notebook and he’d check things off as he found them. I don’t remember how old he was but it has to have been when he was pretty young. 9 maybe? Give or take. Usually I would make up...

MIRROR OF THE MIND

I know, I know, using my blog to write to-do lists is the ULTIMATE in lame. And yet. Who else should I share the most important things in my life with? You think my husband and children give a rat’s ass about my to-do list? It’s short. Or at least it is from this end, when I haven’t actually started it yet. Write Christmas cards Buy stamps Mail Christmas cards Post online Christmas letter Bake Christmas cookies Check gift pile status…are the kids’ presents balanced? If not, remedy Clean the freaking house Buy Christmas food, Swedish and American style Work...
