SWITCHING SCHOOLS

We spent this past week school shopping for Martin. He had expressed a desire to switch schools already back at the beginning of the year, but we didn’t get off our duffs until just recently, when suddenly realizing that if we were going to make the switch, we needed to do it NOW. As in, RIGHT NOW. He’s in the middle of sixth grade and we live in Eslöv’s kommun. A kommun is relatively analogous to a county, and even though we live right on the border between two counties, in fact our village is split in half by the...

THERE’S SO MUCH

There’s so much to be grateful for and to give thanks for that I don’t even know where to start. Family, friends, health, work, …EVERYTHING. I am blessed with goodness. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone reading this! Mwah! *** Clean bill of health at the dentist today. I am completely and totally amazed at how dental technology has changed and improved since I was a child. I don’t think I’ve had anyone stick a needle in my gums in YEARS. I had a check up and cleaning today, and told the dentist that I’ve been worried about one of my left...

MIND GAMES

Martin and I were leaving the house to go for a walk this afternoon, after I got home early from work. We stepped outside the door, and as I was locking it, with my back to the backyard, I said to him, “Martin, go close the playhouse door.” His eyes got all huge and he said, “How did you know the playhouse door was open?? You’re not even looking at it!!” as he started running away behind me, toward the playhouse (aaah, the never-ending pleasure of instant obedience). “I’m a mom! I have eyes in the back of my head!”...

LISTEN & LEARN, READ & REMEMBER

I love reading posts about reading and books and especially young adult and children’s books which I have a huge collection of and soft spot for, and this post by new blog find Diamond in the Window made me laugh out loud. I knew EXACTLY what she meant by “one of us” and EXACTLY how she felt by having some of her recommendations rejected by her kids. Only one of my children is a real reader. Karin reads…usually under pressure, though she does surprise me now and then by picking up something. Usually, however, it’s a Young Jedi book or...

THANKS, I NEEDED THAT

Despite the ups and downs of sorrow the sun keeps on shining and I muddle along. I dragged Martin up off the sofa and made him go for a walk with me after dinner this evening. The sun was lowering, but still high in the sky; it hasn’t reached its zenith yet…we’re still enjoying the lengthening days. It’s cool in the evening air, there’s an autumn-y nip in the spring sunlight which is rather refreshing. I much prefer a cool, sunny spring to a direct dive into humidity and heat, so no complaints here. We pulled on fleeces and started...

SO HELP ME COD, IT’S THE TROUT!

At book group the other night, we got on the subject of jokes and how they spread. Some of the joke trends that I remember most fondly from my own childhood are not a part of the Swedish culture at all, and introducing them to my children, especially to Martin who has the same sense of humor as I do and loves puns, has been fun for me. Elephant jokes and Why did the chicken cross the road jokes and the cannibal jokes we made up a few weeks ago: all very entertaining to the both of us. I get...

LONG PIG, ANYONE?

Counting down at work and getting a bit stressed out because there is always so much to do before you take vacation, and I will not, WILL NOT, work evenings if I can avoid it, even though I know I would get at least a bit more caught up. It’s a river in flood, and sometimes it’s all I can do just to not get swept downstream. One of the women in our department recently left and the majority of her workload descended upon the two of us who work with the marketing implementation work…mostly datasheets for our products, and...

TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT

We’ve been at our wit’s end with Martin’s eating habits lately. Karin’s no walk in the park either, for that matter. She doesn’t like chocolate, cheese, bread or sauces. Martin eats his meals with tiny mouse bites and gags easily and won’t eat anything that has the slightest discoloration or oddness to it: if it’s too hard or too dry or too anything, he just won’t eat it. Both of them are very decided about what edibles they “don’t like” or “won’t eat” but strangely, they’re both usually pretty good about at least trying new things. Yesterday, we were trying...

THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW

I can’t remember him so small, he’s so big now. It’s hard to believe I could hold all of him cradled in my arms when he’s almost as tall now as I am. His feet were so small and so perfect, they fit in the palm of my hand. Now his shoes are nearly longer than mine. But he still has the same smile, the same dimple, the same twinkle in his eye, and the same infectious laugh. 11 years old and growing, going, but not yet gone, thank god.

ONE-UPMANSHIP

Liz: Your hemspråk teacher told me she gave you homework; to google Halloween but you told her you couldn’t because our computer wasn’t working. Martin: yeah Liz: You can do it on my work laptop. You can’t play games on it, but you can google for your homework. Martin: What if we google “games” or “play games”? Liz: What if I google “kill kid”? Martin: Then you’ll probably come into a murder site. Liz: Actually, I’ll probably come into a parenting site. Martin: Ha ha, very funny! Liz: *giggles madly*
