WHAT A WAY TO START THE YEAR

I know some people believe that you will spend your year basically the way you spend the first day of it, but if that’s the case, I might be in big trouble. My day, so far, has consisted of: sleeping late, playing games, reading, listening to music, eating, watching DVDs with Martin, talking on the phone with my brother and calling emergency services to send an ambulance because I thought I might be, maybe, having a heart attack. Yeah. So not fun. I’ve been having really stabby chest pains for the past couple of days. They’re intermittent…they come on when...

THINGS I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE SURE YOU KNOW

If you are American, you DO NOT NEED to capitalize every word of every sentence or bulletpoint. Please stop it. We are not German. You DO NOT NEED to add 2 spaces after every period when you are typing. That went out with the typewriter. Stop it. If you are walking somewhere, anywhere, DO NOT stop in the middle of passageways or doorways or anywhere where someone might want to get through or past you. MOVE OUT OF THE WAY. If you are driving and turning, there is NO NEED to slow down to a complete STOP before you turn....

GAH

We just got the results of the book group vote on the next year’s worth of books and I WON MY BET WITH MYSELF, dammit: The Fault in Our Stars got voted in. AND of the ONLY two books that I had already read, guess what? One of them got voted in. And it’s the stupid Satanic Verses, which WHY would anyone want to read now?? Why? GAH. Sadly, only one of my recommendations made the list, though 3 others were one vote short. I don’t care, I’ll read them anyway. Here’s what got voted in, in no particular order:...

RANTY

Ugh. I’m so glad I’m almost done with this part of the job. As VP Membership for the AWC, I not only have to call new members when they register, activate them and keep track of whether or not they’ve paid their dues but every year when our new season starts, and membership fees are due for everyone, which is the end of August…I have to keep track of ALL the payments (with the help of our excellently patient treasurer) and finally deactivate all those who have moved, are not renewing or who never answer. I put several notices and...

AMERICAN IDIOTS

A woman I know, who is a member of the AWC here, despite having moved up north in Sweden several years ago, emailed me yesterday to tell me about something that had just happened to her asking if anyone else in the club was having the same issue. One of her banks, where she and her (also American) husband have their savings accounts, had written to them telling them that since they were American citizens, the bank was closing their account. Sweden recently signed the FATCA agreement with the U.S. As of July 1st, 2014, Swedish banks are obligated to...

BEEN DOWN SO FAR ALL I SEE IS UP

Yeah, so the whole weekend sucked. I can’t think of any other time I’ve been in that much consistent, awful pain, since…mmmm. Childbirth? The toothache that led up to the root canal? Toss-up. Anyway, I went to the doctor on Monday and I have “frozen shoulder” and he gave me a cortisone shot on the spot and aaaaahhhh… sweet, sweet relief. It’s not 100% gone and I can feel it threatening to come back after only 2 full days of working so have to talk to my boss and get SOMETHING, anything, figured out about what in my work situation...

OUCHIES

I was going to post this week, more than once, but have been prevented by massive flare-up of the inflammation in my arm & shoulder I’ve been dealing with now for what feels like years. Pinched nerve two years ago started the whole thing and it has never really gone away completely, coming back with painful regularity. This time it started hurting last week and by Thursday was so painful I left work after lunch. My arm was totally useless, no strength in it and stabbing pain constant; worse when I tried to move my arm either in front of...

NOT WAVING

I’m awfully tired right now, sad and pretty down. My freelance colleague, Lena, died of cancer on Sunday night and it’s affected the whole team. We’re all really dragging and it’s hard to concentrate at work or at home, or even while driving in between. We sent her a card last Friday and all I keep thinking about is that I didn’t get to say goodbye to her and she didn’t even get our card in time, and it just sucks. Work is insane as well, which doesn’t help. I come home and power-walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes...

DOWN TOO LONG

This past week was pretty horrible. We found out that one of our freelancers, a wonderfully kind woman, whom I’ve been working with for the nearly 10 years I’ve been at my company, is very ill with cancer. It’s the second time for her…she beat breast cancer several years ago, but the cancer this time is worse, metastasized and in her skeleton and stomach. Apparently they won’t do chemo or radiation, which brings one to the conclusion that the doctors don’t think it will help and that it’s not worth going through. Yesterday was the day I was scheduled for...
