FULL SPEED AHEAD TO SPRING

Getting compliments on my hair from colleagues all day long Having to eat sushi for lunch because there were no salads in the vending machine and the lunch-of-the-day selection was nasty Leaving work early while the sun was doing a bang-up job of imitating a summer day Getting the word from my doctor to stop the skin treatment medicine I’ve been on for 4 months because it has done its job Playing hookey for an hour after the doctor’s visit to speed shop: groceries—done! Presents—done! Even going back to work and working for another hour which allowed me to thwack...

AND YET SINGS, KNOWING SHE HAS WINGS

Birds are everywhere here. I suspect I notice them more now because there are so few other creatures out and about in this grey and snow-scabbed landscape. Some days ago, in the space of a short while, birds made their presence known to me in various ways. We were in the car, driving to the home of a couple that live far out in the country, who had promised the kids good sledding in the company of their son. I saw: a fat black-and-white magpie sitting alone in the black branches of a skeletal tree, his shape silhouetted against the...

WHO NEEDS BULLETPOINTS WHEN YOU’VE GOT ASTERISKS?

A link on an art blog that I check in on now and then was recommending a certain ezine: Get lost for hours and hours! And I thought, who has hours and hours? All you people who have hours and hours to sit and peruse the archives or issues of any website, where do you find the time? I mean, if you don’t do it for work? Okay, I spend hours and hours on the computer, but I’m usually in the middle of 3 or 4 projects: website maintenance, newsletter editing, spider solitaire, book editing, inventory updates, music editing, reading...

A DOUBLE HANDFUL OF THINGS I’M THINKING ABOUT THESE DAYS

Salad’s not so bad, if you add lots of things you like to it. That wasn’t nearly as hard as I thought it would be, why the hell didn’t I start this sooner? I’m STOKED. Martin starts piano lessons this week. Does this mean we have to get a piano? Good god, where would we put it?? Karin wants to take karate lessons. Why am I not surprised? WHY doesn’t LJ let you search for communities? Why are some of the books I read as a child and loved not nearly as great as I remember them when I read...

I KNEW THAT I WOULD, NOW

Oh! I feel good (da nanananana!) I was gonna post yesterday but first I was at work (no posting allowed (ha! (I just typed aloud) by order of me) and then I was racing to the grocery store to buy ingredients for my super wonderful yummo dinner that I was hosting for my first friends and then I was cooking cooking COOKING like a madwoman, and then I was cleaning up the hot chicken bouillon broth water that I slopped all over the stovetop, the front of the oven and the kitchen floor when I suffered a lapse in judgement...

RAISIN THE CURRANT STANDARD: A POST WITH A-PEEL

I’m really weird about fresh fruit. I love it, but it has to be perfect. It has to be just right. Take apples, for instance. I can’t eat most apples, they’re too gooshy and the peel comes away from the flesh and feels like a wet sticker, still with the adhesive on, that slightly mushy fruit meat. I only like Royal Gala apples: so crisp and clean and crunchy with a peel that seems like part of the fruit, like a coating of flavor instead of skin. I like d’Anjou pears, the ones that look terrible, bruised and swollen, that...

I WAS GOING TO COUNTDOWN BUT I ONLY HAD FOURS AND FIVES

Only 4 more days until the solstice and the days will begin lengthening again! Only 4 more days of work before Christmas vacation! Only 5 days until my brother and Simone arrive for a week! Only 5 more little presents to buy and I’m done! Only 5 more days to payday, thank goodness! Things That Made Me Happy This Weekend: talking to my oldest best friend Becky last night and hearing how well things are going for her this year after a couple of really rough ones; reading the pregnancy announcement of a dear online friend; receiving a box from...

I DON’T KNOW IF THERE’LL BE SNOW, BUT HAVE A CUP OF CHEER

I joke about stressmas, but the truth is, I love Christmas preparations and I love Christmas. I do as much as I can to make sure that the holiday magic is there for both myself and my family. If that means knocking myself out for a month, so be it. The thing that actually causes the stress is that I can’t leave off doing all the regular daily stuff to just concentrate on the holidaze! Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the cookies, the tree, the ornaments, the nativity and all the hope that goes with it, the decorations, the cookies,...
