SCATTERED PLEASURES

Feeling a bit scattered this evening, as though the super-focus I’ve been reveling in all week has finally loosened and blown apart a little bit. Some days I think I am just the same as ever. Other days I can’t believe how much I’ve changed. Just deleted several lines of existential angsty garble, most likely brought on by too-rapidly approaching birthday. Be glad. Some things I am thinking about: 2 weeks in the States! Woot! Can’t wait! 2 weeks with my mom! WOOT! My super salads for lunch have done the trick this week: I’ve lost 1.8 kilos. Good to...

RABBITS DO IT TO YOU EVERY TIME

Whilst (whilst!) out for our evening promenade, Martin and I met a large wood pigeon who sparked a discussion about the oversized birds one finds in Sweden, which led to a mention of a red-eyed rabbit (actually, a hare) which Martin had seen in our garden some time ago, and how big THEY are (even the ones without red eyes). I wondered why he had red eyes and Martin said he was moving very jerkily so I said maybe he was sick, and Martin said maybe he was a robot. Which led to the evolution of this tongue twister (say...

PLUSH PURGING & A CONTEST!

The Great Plush Animal Purge of 2009 is over and lo! We have all survived. In the playroom we have a huge round basket. It’s big enough for both kids to get into and hunch down. It was STUFFED full (ha! get it?) of stuffed animals. In addition, Martin had an hanging toy storage unit that was full of stuffed animals in each of 6 compartments. AND both kids have a half dozen or so of their very favorites in their beds. All in all, I suspect we had well over 150 stuffed animals of various sizes and cuteness. If...

WHAT’S BEEN GOING ON

It’s been really cool and still in the evenings this past week, with clearly defined clouds in the sky and amazing sunsets, regardless of the temperature or weather during the day. Swallows are flying high above the village, darting like maniacs in loop-de-loops and I’m already seeing geese and hearing swans winging by overhead on their migratory airpaths. Even though it is the middle of summer, it feels like the arc is descending, partly, I’m sure, because I’m back at work. For the first time in the 12 years of existence of the AWC Malmö, we had to cancel the...

MEETING POINT

The place we stayed at in the Netherlands is in a little dangly bit of the country that hangs below the rest of Holland like a pom-pom poodle tail. To the left is Belgium and to the right is Germany and about 3 kilometers up the road from the apartment is the place where the 3 countries come together. It’s called Drielandenpunt, or “3 Country Point” and it has its own website (though not in English), and is located at the top of the highest point in the Netherlands, Mount Vaals. The hill is just over 1000 feet high (322...

CASTLES & CAVERNS

I like castles a lot. What’s not to like? Oh sure, they’re often drafty, and probably a nightmare to maintain and let’s not even mention the heating bills, but imagine! Living in a castle must make you feel like the aristocracy whether or not you actually have any drop of royal blood running through your veins. When we lived in Europe and traveled all over the place, we always visited castles. When we visit my brother in Bavaria, invariably a castle sneaks on to the agenda. In Wales for a week while Anders went to a class, when Martin was...

JUST GETTING STARTED

Double digits! My baby turns 10 today. 10 years of whirling, twirling, grimacing, roly-poly monkeybutt craziness! What would I do without her? She makes me fly up in the treetops with exasperation and with love. Happy birthday to my beautiful 10-year-old daughter!

THE BEST ANTIQUES TO COLLECT ARE OLD FRIENDS

The last day of vacation was both a lazy one and a busy one. I slept in super late, after waking briefly around 9 a.m. and then dozing off again. The sun was shining most of the day and it warmed up nicely in the afternoon. Martin and I completely cleaned out his room in preparation for Anders to start the re-decorating work. I went to the grocery store, did a load of laundry and baked & decorated a cake. Tomorrow is a crazy day: I’m sure work will be frantic and stressful, though I hope it’s not too bad....

SWEETER FOR THE EATER

Our cherry tree is the second one we’ve had; only 4 years old. The first one died after a year and we were a bit worried about the current one last summer as it had a bad bug infestation which my mom and I treated with soap and water. Two of the branches are dead and need to be removed. Last year we had a total of FOUR cherries. But this year: BUMPER CROP! We had to put blue net up and everything and the crows and jackdaws and magpies made concerted efforts to tease out the dangling rubies through...
