SUMMER BLUES & POTTERY PAINTING

It’s already nearing the end of August, and I feel like it was JUST April a minute ago. I know that years speed up as you get older, and I know I’ve kvetched about the phenomenon before, like pretty much everyone else, but how is it nearly autumn again already?? Eeeesh.

Anders weeded the vegetable garden yesterday and uprooted all the kohlrabi except two, which had been thoroughly holed by worms and slugs, and then he uprooted all the snap peas as well, half of which never came up at all, and half of which yielded a couple of handfuls of snap peas but were clearly not thriving. He picked 7 cucumbers, and there are at least 8 more growing fat and green. He’s planning to pickle them tonight. The tomato plants are also not thriving at all, and what few tomatoes we have coming have been green for ages, as we’ve had so little sun to help transform them. Ah well, some years the garden is hit-or-miss. We have had lots of excellent potatoes, carrots, and onions, in addition to the cucumbers, so there’s that. And there are still 2 small kohlrabi which we might be able to harvest if they get just a little bigger.

I finished and ordered the photo book for our Tesla trip last week, and now I’m debating whether to put books together for some previous years’ trips and vacations. Is it weird to do them so late? We had the week on Bornholm last summer, and Rome for Anders’ 60th, and Gotland for midsummer week in 2021, and lots of trips/vacations from before the pandemic. The last (and really, only) photobook I did was for Iceland in 2011…that’s ridiculous! I mean, I have documented them in detail, with photos, on this blog, and they’re included in the print annuals each year, but I don’t have photobooks of them with color photos printed out. I don’t know, I can’t decide.

It’s been both a busy and a lazy weekend, which has been just right. The kids and I went to Malmö on Friday to a pottery-painting place. It was an event that I organized for the AIC but it was only 8 of us: Lisel and her daughter Elsa, and Martine and a friend. We had fun, and I plan to do it again. I also found out there is a similar place in Lund, so we will check that out as well. I painted a square wavy plate with crazy florals. Karin did a sunset ombré coffee mug in squares, and Martin painted nautilus shells on an oversize tea/soup mug. I would have done the mug too, but it was not quite big enough for soup, in my opinion. 2 hours was plenty of time for me, but both the kids wanted more time. Maybe I’ll plan another one for before Christmas. I’m picking up our ceramics on Wednesday after work, so we’ll see how my crazy floral looks after firing!

We picked up friends of Karin’s from her ski guide job last winter and brought home pizza and ate on the porch with them. They were very nice, despite my not understanding a WORD of Danish. They stayed the night and on Saturday, we served a big breakfast spread and then watched the Swedish women’s soccer team play for and win the bronze match of the world cup. Anders and I went into Malmö in the evening and met up with Camilla at Spegeln to finally see Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Lots of OLD men who were young just a minute ago (April? haha!). It was decent, but overlong, and it was kind of bittersweet to watch Harrison Ford trying to keep up with his own legend. I liked Phoebe Waller-Bridge and her character, but overall, thought it was only good, not great.

One more weekend left in August, and then we’re officially heading into fall. Need to get moving on AIC stuff for the new season as well. Eeeesh!
