WHAT’S THE BUZZ, TELL ME WHAT’S HAPPENING

Last week at work was awful. Too many things that were frustrating, rage-inducing or just plain annoying happened. I am VERY glad of this long weekend, though I am going to have to check into work emails and possibly do some work regardless because there is just so much of it. We were all freaking out over the amount of short weeks in the next two months (the first of which is this one). You’d think that we’d be THRILLED about having all this time off after the long holiday drought since the beginning of January, but 1) there are...

HUBRIS (BLESS YOU)

What do you think is a defining characteristic of being human? I don’t mean bipedal, tool-using, opposable thumbs, I think-therefore-I-am, human. I mean what sets us apart from the instinctual, animal, get enough to eat, mate, sleep, human? Today, it was a sense of obligation. I say human because I doubt rabbits with a head cold give a shit about their responsibilities. Or bears. Do animals get colds? They must, since we’re essentially animals, and we get colds. Despite being REALLY sick with a whopper of a head cold that has been battening on me for days, I felt OBLIGATED...

THE BAD WITH THE GOOD WITH THE BAD WITH THE GOOD

No let-up at work so far…in fact, just the opposite as one of my team members has had a bit of a breakdown due to several factors and is taking time off for mental health. Apparently the fact that doing so will contribute to giving the rest of us a breakdown wasn’t enough of a deterrent. Augh. Yesterday was horrible as I was already stressed about everything at work before I even got there, and when I drove up to work and parked, I realized that my parking permit was missing from the little holder on the windshield. AUGH! Anders...

BOGGLING ABOUT EVERYTHING

I continue to be flabbergasted at the apparently unending depths to which the US president is sinking. When will the nightmare end? I am also boggled at how anyone who voted for him expected anything different. Honestly, this trainwreck of a presidency was obvious from the start. GAH. People keep asking me how it’s going, how it was to leave Martin in the US, how it is to be almost empty-nesting. To be honest, it’s fine. I’m fine. I mean, I miss Martin, but at this point, I’m just really glad that he’s starting school and that we aren’t driving...

THE BUSY LIFE

It’s the last day of January and I’ve made it through the first month of the year and last week’s crazy. More ahead, however…the fun never ends! Our first choir practice was last Thursday and I came out of it positively bouncing. I knew I had missed singing but hadn’t really realized how much until I was there. It was SO FUN! There are 2 choir leaders, a young woman who sings and leads and a young man who plays accompaniment on the guitar. They handed out printed sheets of lyrics, not sheet music, which was a little weird for...

SLIDING

I went to the mall this afternoon to check out a couple of opticians…I need to get new glasses, not necessarily because they are no longer good, though they’re no longer perfect, but because the frames aren’t holding together anymore and the film has worn off the glass in spots on both sides. It’s not noticeable when I’m wearing them but I’m sure it’s time to consider new ones. The problem is that I really like the style of my eyeglass frames and now I have to find new ones that I like enough to spend a fortune on, because...

THERE’S NO NEED TO FEEL DOWN

This past weekend was my 18th anniversary of moving to Sweden. 18 years! Every year I am equally boggled by how long I have lived here. If you add on the 6 years I lived abroad as a child, that makes 24 years total I have lived abroad. Considering my age, which no one should be considering, that means only 2 more years and I’ll have lived half my life overseas (note to skeptics, I checked the math with my husband). Half my life! Martin: Why are you using Firefox and not Chrome? Liz: Um, I don’t know Martin: *under...

A LITTLE BIT OF THIS, A LITTLE BIT OF THAT

For some stupid reason, Martin’s school did not do individual school photos this year. Or else he missed the day and didn’t find out if there was a make-up day. I have heard from two other friends with kids his age that their schools didn’t do photos either. WTH? Now I have to find time to take him to a photographer if I don’t want to have a gaping hole in the parade o’ school photos that every child’s life (at least in the Western world) is not complete without. Warning: this post is going to be all over the...

WORKIVERSARY

I’m having a bit of a blank spot. Writer’s block. Been there, wrote that. According to LinkedIn, it was my 10-year work anniversary yesterday. I’m not sure how LinkedIn knows, since I don’t even remember exactly which day I started with this company. I knew it was October, but I’d have to do some digging to figure out which day it was. … Well! That was easy! Helps to have a blog that I used to post on EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. What the heck did I find to write about?? I just went back in my archives and I started...
