MINDGAMES

Oops, I missed a day. How did I manage that?? I honestly have no idea. I was doing so well!! When I’m wasting time, which seems to happen much more frequently now than ever before, it’s by playing games on the iPad. Sometimes the kids play with me. In the mornings, if Martin is getting ready at the same time I am, he always plays the daily Seven Little Words and Red Herring with me. Sometimes, if it’s just a couple of us at the dinner table, we’ll put the iPad between us an play Logo Quiz or Iconic or...

EVERYTHING WAS FUNNY TONIGHT

Conversation at the dinner table Martin: We had a test in French class today Liz. Oh? On what? Martin: Useful words Liz: Aren’t all words useful? Martin: Well, paraplegic is less useful than inside, for example Liz: *giggles madly* true Then the three of us, Anders, Martin and I (Karin is spending the night at a friend’s house), had a long, drawn-out conversation starting from the fact that Martin asked me if I knew what longer word the Swedish word kompis was from. Kompis means friend. “No, I don’t,” I answered. “It’s from kompanjon,” he told me. Adding an “is”...

A POST! A POST! MY KINGDOM FOR A POST!

HI there! Bet you thought I’d forgotten all about you. Nope. Just busy. You SAW my list of things to do this month, yes? And I am not even halfway through. REALLY, I have lots of time to post because my mom came on Tuesday and she has so far: made a gigantic pot of delicious soup for dinner, walked the dog (who is gone, boo hoo), washed the dishes, and AND IRONED EVERYTHING that I have been blowing off for WEEKS. She ironed 3 blouses, a pair of pants, a HUGE tablecloth and a giant pile of Christmas ribbons....

JUST BECAUSE YOU’RE PARANOID DOESN’T MEAN THEY’RE NOT OUT TO GET YOU

When we were in northern Germany, we stayed in a 2-bedroom apartment up a steep flight of stairs. There was no living room, just a small dining area, a long skinny kitchen and a dinky bathroom. Anders and I got the big master bedroom, while Mom had a twin bed in the kids’ room: they shared a bunkbed, Martin on top. I don’t know if the room was actually ever a child’s room but there were mice & mushrooms painted on the window in that special translucent paint for glass and a small bookshelf with some careworn and obviously discarded...

EAT. PIE. LOVE.

At the last AWC board meeting, we were discussing the seeming apathy of our club members who aren’t signing up for or participating in many of the activities that are being up on the calendar by our hard-working activities officers. It’s hard organizing activities; it’s a total crapshoot. You never know what’s going to work and what isn’t…some years things get a great turn-out and the next year the same thing has to be cancelled. There are so many factors: time of year, day of week, whether the activity costs money, whether it falls after payday, whatever. You just try...

THE STORY OF THE FROG LAMP

Once upon a time, during the years I lived in Chicago, my parents became completely obsessed with antiquing. They went to auctions and collected things and bought some really beautiful stuff. And because there are approximately a million antique dealers and architectural salvage companies, and flea markets and 2nd hand stores in and around Chicago, when they came to visit me, I went with them, too. And caught the bug. However, since I had champagne tastes on a beer budget (like how I throw around those alcohol references as if I know what I’m talking about?) I never bought much....

WELL VERSED

My cousin Cate jokes about Inappropriate Movie Night which she’s ended up at more than once, taking her young daughter along to a film that turned out to be…more adult than she had bargained for. Anders and I have accidentally had the same thing happen to us more than once ourselves, getting all excited about showing an old film for a Friday night family myskväll that we remember as being great (and that usually WAS great), but which turns out to be…more adult than we remembered. A Fish Called Wanda, for example, which both my kids still cite as a...

HOW TO DATE YOURSELF

Watched a DVD with the kids last night that contained the first 3 episodes from the TV series Bewitched, which I used to LOVE. They were…ASTOUNDED by the special effects. I thought Elizabeth Montgomery was great, and I must have heard back in 1995 that she had died of cancer, but I didn’t remember it so I was a little sad when I googled her last night and found out she’d passed away at 62. Do you remember when Dick York was just quietly replaced with Dick Sargent and nobody seemed to notice? I was too young to pay attention,...

1 X 2

No shooting stars for us tonight, though I can see a glimmer of clear sky near the horizon at the outer edges of the solid cloud cover that blankets us. It’s cold out, too, dipping down into the lower teens (Celsius), a chill reminder that summer is fleeting and layers are essential in this northern clime. It’s been an up and down day of really good things and bummers of the lighter variety. A friend I see much too seldom had to cancel our get-together plans for spending the evening talking non-stop. I had an excellent sushi lunch with brief_therapy...

GALLINIPPERS & GOLLYWHOPPERS SURE SOUNDS BETTER THAN SLUGS & SNAILS

I am such a slug. If I was any sluggier, I’d have tentacles and leave a trail of slime behind me as I VERY SLOWLY slithered about. In order to check to see if there were any usefully named parts of a slug for the previous sentence, I was forced to google “parts of a slug” and now I’m all icked out. I’ve been on Wikipedia a lot lately; Google consistently leads me there. I learned the other day, just by random chance, that the bugs I have always called Daddy Longlegs are not, in fact, a Daddy Longlegs spider....
