COMING DOWN

One more day of freedom and possibility. One more day to do whatever I want. One more day to fill up on relaxing, reading and lying about. The trees are bare but for the lights. Anders is in charge of the lights, so I will nag him to do them tomorrow. All you have to do is look hard at the tree and needles shower to the floor. Several branches are completely bare where the pull to remove an ornament left only the stick in its wake. Sad trees. The dining room table is COVERED in ornaments. It always take...

WHAT I DID ON MY SUMMER VACATION

We had several people boggle at us when we made the announcement that we had chosen Toronto for our BIG birthday trip. Even the border patrol goggled at my sister on her way into the Canada, when she answered the question about whether she was entering the country for business or leisure. “What the heck are you going to do in Toronto for a week?” he sputtered. Granted it wasn’t our first choice, but it turned out to be a good one. We had a fantastic time, and I’ve got the photos to prove it!

A WEEK IN VÅNEVIK IN PHOTOS

Everyone took lots of photos while John and Simone were visiting, which makes me really happy. It’s ridiculous that we let 2 years pass since the last time we saw them. It’s not like they live on the other side of the ocean…It’s 2 years since I’ve seen my sister and her family as well, but since they DO live on the other side of the ocean, it at least make some sense. Plus we’ll get to see them in just a few more weeks, so yay! Simone and the boys flew up to Copenhagen the day after Midsummer Eve...

IN THE BACK OF MY HEAD

This morning, around 10 a.m., my colleague Anette came into my office and told me how much she loved the shirt Karin had on today…she had just been at the ICA grocery store in Södra Sandby, the next village over from ours, where Karin goes to school, and seen her with a couple of friends just hopping off their bikes and going in to the store. “They looked so young, and beautiful and carefree,” she said to me. My reaction, since my daughter was supposed to be at school, was: “What the hell was she doing at ICA?!” So I...

PERFECT DAYS

This has been a nearly perfect long weekend. Perfect weather, perfect amount of things to do, perfect amount of sleeping in. There was sushi and sunshine and summer flowers. A not-too-long to-do list with almost everything checked off and then some. Time with family and time to myself. One book finished and another begun. And an anniversary to celebrate. The yard looks beautiful, well, at least it looks, like Martin says, as if someone cares about it. Anders clipped the hedge and pulled all the long grass and weeds from around the cherry tree and set a ring of stones...

FULL OF WONDER

As always, in the spring, all the gorgeous colors and blooming madness everywhere make me grab for my camera. I notice, especially when driving, how much closer in everything is…the horizon is harder to see, grass and fields and trees hide the far corners of the sky. The bones of the world are covered in greenery and it’s all so THICK. Usually I prefer photos of people, and I’ve taken some of those too, but I wanted to gather some of the flower photos here, a pictorial paean to spring. The horse across the ditch got curious when we were...

A ROOM FOR GROWING UP IN

Anders recently finished renovating Karin’s room, and we bought new bed covers, pillows and frames for her wall. There are still some small details to finish, but they’ll get done when they get done. Just to indulge in a little bit of nostalgia, this was Karin’s room when we first built and moved into this house: THEN, in 2009, when she was in the midst of her kick-ass karate ninja career, we re-did her room completely, and it was SO COOL: BUT NOW! She’s no longer a girl. She’s a young woman. With sophisticated tastes and a decided interest in...

WALKING ON SUNSHINE

So far, this has been an absolutely wonderful and relaxing long weekend and there’s still the rest of this evening and all of tomorrow to enjoy of it. Karin is up in Gothenburg, participating in the Future Cup Invitational, as goalie for her team. They are playing in the semi-final game tonight, but we can hopefully keep track of the match progress live on the website. They won their first 3 games and she only let in one goal, so she was sounding quite happy when I talked to her a couple of hours ago. Yesterday, we had some good...

NO COAL AT ALL

Just a select few of the photos that Anders and Mom and I took during her visit and the holidays. She’s already gone to Germany and it went too fast, as always. We haven’t even heard that she got there okay…assuming she’s adjusting from teenagers to toddlers & babies! I can’t believe there is only one more day to 2013! Happy New Year! Anders with his mom on Christmas Eve Julbord! Martin opens his big present OMG a typewriter! Be careful what you wish for! (actually, it’s really cool and over 100 years old!) Best for last, of course! New...

DO YOU NOM WHAT I NOM

I am officially on vacation! WOOT! We’ve been baking and wrapping and decorating and shopping and eating and putting up trees. We have a HUGE tree in the living room (the big tree) and a little tree in the playroom (the kid tree) and both of them are now decorated, though there are a lot of ornaments that didn’t fit, even with TWO trees. We went last Saturday and cut down the big tree and then bought the little tree but when we put them up, and got the lights out, we discovered there were two many sections of lights...
