DARK DAYS

I’m feeling the lack of light these days; after nearly 16 years here perhaps I shouldn’t rule out the very real possibility of seasonal affective disorder, though I still manage to peel myself out of bed each morning when the alarm rings. Even with the clock bumped back an hour recently, the constant cloud cover means that it’s dark in the morning when I rise and dark already in the early evening when I leave the office. I’m not depressed, just a bit down. Today when I drove home from work, after picking up Martin at school, we took the...

MOSTLY KARIN

I was maybe a little too hasty in my despairing busy-angst last week, because I just sat up and looked around me and realized I have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING BOOKED any evening this week and I don’t even have to drive Karin to or from any practices! (More on that in a minute) How did THAT happen? It’s like a shining oasis of empty calendar in the middle of a giant sea of crazy. The reason why Karin isn’t going to practice this week is because she fell and hurt herself in gym class on Friday and we ended up in...

UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

Muahahahahaha! No more boring existential wah-wah poor-me mutterings from my mom. In with the new, out with the old! Consider this your wake-up call for AWESOME BLOGGING AT ITS BEST and bow before the beauty of Karinek!

THE BOOK OF MARTIN & KARIN

One of the perfect present projects that I did for this past Christmas involved going through hundreds of digital photos on the many, many DVDs we have. I was collecting the best photos of Martin and Karin through the years to produce a photo book that would be printed and bound for the 2 grandmothers. The problem was that my kids are so darn cute it was nearly impossible to edit down the giant folder full of photos I ended up with. And that wasn’t even counting baby photos, which I didn’t include at all. The photos ranged from about...

STANDING FIRM

When I came home, Karin climbed all over me and demanded to make muffins. “Muffins?” I said. “We don’t need no stinkin’ muffins.” “Yes, we do,” she insisted, OVER AND OVER AND OVER, like 12.5 year olds do, and god help me when she’s an actual teenager. She had SMS’d her father and asked if she could make muffins and of course he said yes because he is ON HIS WAY TO CHINA. I fobbed her off with the first we have to get the laundry in and then I have to get dinner ready and then you have to...

OUR MOM

Someone suggested that Martin and Karin write an Our Mom post like the ones I did about them. I will plan on doing one about Anders sometime, but he’s a lot more private than I am so I have to check with him first. πŸ™‚ So, here is My Martin and My Karin about ME! —– Our mom is very weird πŸ™‚ Our mom is veeery *cough* funny πŸ™‚ Our mom embarrasses us by singing when our friends are here. Our mom is loving and caring, most of the time… πŸ˜‰ Our mom wishes Karin would play Wordfeud with her...

MY KARIN

Karin is a monkey in disguise. Karin is a girl learning how to become a young woman. Karin has a top made out of rubber and a bottom made out of springs. She’s bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy, fun fun fun fun fun. And wonderful! Just like her brother, Karin’s favorite food is sushi. Her next favorite food is creamy crab nachos. Whenever Karin asks you what your favorite something is, be prepared, because as soon as you answer, she’ll say, “And after that?” Karin’s mobile phone is glued to her hand and she gets frantic if I try and take...

*BLEEP*OVERS

Martin and I think we shall try and spot some shooting stars tonight, if I can stay awake until it’s dark enough. It’s fairly clear and the sunset is a lovely glowing orange against the blue. It’s turned all the little clouds pink. Karin is spending the night with a teammate friend in SΓΆdra Sandby, the next village over. As glad as I am that she has made so many good friends on her soccer team and is finally reveling in girl friendships and everything that goes along with them, it makes me crazy when she calls me up at...

NOT ENOUGH SYNONYMS FOR AMAZING

Iceland was amazing. I wish we’d had more time and that I had better feet for hiking and better knees for climbing because that country is just MADE for hikers and climbers. Everywhere we turned there was something incredible to look at. We were completely saturated in natural beauty for 8 days straight. 1000-year old lava fields covered with pale green-gray moss like melted cheese on pizza (for MILES). Craters tall and squat and smooth. Pseudo-craters covered in short, brilliant green grass looking like a string of octopus tentacle suckers. Lava formations like some crazy-quilt rock-garden fantasy. Bright blue mineral...

SPRING FEVER

I’ve lost count of how many beautiful days we have had this past week. I don’t remember EVER having this many days of this kind of weather in a row before; not here in Sweden, anyway. And the forecast I looked at earlier just showed more of the same: sunny, sunny, partly sunny, sunny. Whee! Sweden, when you get Spring up your nose, you really get Spring up your nose! Spring is sproinging out all over. Everything that blossoms has suddenly exploded. The bird cherry across the ditch in the backyard blew up like a giant Jiffy Pop yesterday (without...
