WHAT’S NEXT, I ASK YOU?

Trip-planning, like party-planning, gives me hives, a headache and a bad attitude. I suppose I should be thrilled at how quickly the Internet and its myriad trip-planning sites can digest the information I give it (dates, places, price requirements) and spit it back out in the form of quickly scanned multiple choice format; nothing could really be easier. However, it’s taken me 3 days and numerous howls for help to my husband and my mom to figure out the best possible combination of departures and arrivals and layovers and airlines and prices. And that was only for 3 of us;...

FIVE DAY DOG

It’s no secret that we would love to have a pet with fur. And no secret that we, sadly, can’t; at least not of the dog or cat variety (and the other choices aren’t palatable or preferred). So we dog- and cat-sit whenever we have a chance, with the caveat that it can’t be for more than week, which is approximately how long it takes for Anders to break out the inhaler or my eyes to start itching like crazy. I’m a confirmed cat-person and my willingness to dog-sit is mostly done for the sake of my children, even though...

:(

Oh my god, I am so sad. I just heard the horrible news that our good friends had to put their dog, Chimay, to sleep last weekend, after he suffered a slipped disk in his spine. He was the most wonderful sweetheart of a dog. We had the signal honor of having Chimay at our house for a week about a year and a half ago and have greeted him with proprietary affection every time we’ve seen him since. This sure put a damper on the good mood post below. I’m sitting here with tears in my eyes wondering how...

CANINE CLARIFICATION

Just to clear up what seems to be some confusion on the part of my readers: We WANT a dog. We BADLY want a dog (well, I would rather have a cat), but see, here’s the thing…I had cats my whole life, but grew to be allergic to them over time. I was taking pills while I was in the States, but that wouldn’t have stopped me from continuing to have cats. When I met Anders I had 2 cats. He was not allergic to cats when we met. We loved the cats and they were a part of our...

DOGNABIT

I always show Martin and Karin the photos of my online friend’s cats and dogs, and of course they can’t get enough of Cute Overload. So, when I saw that the pretty pretty Bluepoppy, who has been in a marvelous frenzy of daily posting lately, quite unlike her usual practice of making us sadly refresh and refresh and refresh wait a few days between nuggets of bloggy goodness, and MUCH APPRECIATED by her adoring public, had posted this scrumptious photo of her darling Daisy pup this evening, I immediately, of course, called Karin and Martin over to the computer to...

WHAT A WONDERFUL FEELING, I’M HAPPY AGAIN

When a project gets its teeth in me, it’s as if I’m suddenly wearing blinders. I don’t want to pay any attention to things outside the narrow focus of my current obsession. Having to stop what I’m doing for other necessary or pressing demands, like feeding the kids or doing laundry or answering the phone, makes me grumpy. I want to keep on working on my project until I am done or until the obsession suddenly wears thin for a bit and I can slow down and swing aside and do something else (sometimes it’s another project! or 2 at...

TAKE A BOW WOW!

Meet our houseguest! This is Chimay (pronounced “shim-ay”) who was named after a Belgian beer. He’s the sweetest, calmest, prettiest cocker spaniel I have ever met, and he’s all ours until next Wednesday! Mikael and Lene dropped him off this evening after giving us a crash course in Having a Dog 101 (including the fine art of picking up dog poo in a little black bag without having to come in actual contact with it). He was a bit confused when his humans and his brother Eddie shut the door in his face and left him here, but he seems...

GRAB BAG

Martin and I were sitting out on the deck this morning, enjoying the beautiful weather. I had a book, but Martin kept talking to me, so I wasn’t reading much. Suddenly, he asked me if I wanted a foot massage and informed me that he was pretty good at them. “Do you want me to give you one?” he asked. We were sitting at either end of the deck couch, so my feet were right up next to him. “I never say no to a foot rub,” I said, “but were did YOU learn to give foot rubs?” He cocked...

:(

I’m so bummed out I can hardly see straight. Anders is allergic to dogs.
