PREP

Busy week, busy weekend, busy week, busy weekend…that’s how the rest of the year plays out (see last post). I’m feeling rather accomplished, considering how much I have to get done. The house is decorated for Christmas (no tree(s), that will be in 2 weeks, most likely and I got the cookies baked for the cookie exchange on Tuesday. Had a lovely dinner with Debbie and Camilla yesterday and presents to be mailed are ready to go, and I’m finishing my Christmas cards tonight, so I feel like I’m ahead of schedule, yay! The weather has gotten quite cold now,...

TRAUTES HEIM, GLÜCK ALLEIN

Sunday after a trip: I did a load of laundry, stripped and made our bed, went grocery shopping and read most of my book. Anders drove Karin to work, emptied the dishwasher and is putting the winter tires on my car. We talked to Martin, who is in Arequipa, for awhile…all’s well and he’s having a great time. He still hasn’t sorted out his return ticket though, so I admonished him, as I am his mother and that is my job. We got home after 11 pm last night and I was so tired. We made it to the ferry...

WELL HELLO THERE!

Did you miss me? I missed me! I missed you, too! It’s hard to believe that it’s been a month away and now we’re back. It was full on summer in the States but back home in Sweden, I feel we’ve landed in the early onset of autumn and I have to say I am SO GLAD. I never do well in heat and humidity and we had enough of it this past month to last me a lifetime. There’s a lot of reasons why I love living in Sweden, but cool weather and no humidity trumps just about everything....

ALL AT ONCE

I am the lamest blogger that ever lived. Okay, not really. There are lamer bloggers out there (naming no names). I guess when you are a blogger who is no longer really blogging, you are an epilogue. There have been lots of things to write about, but they are all happening at once which makes sitting down and finding words harder than you would think. This past weekend was Swedish Mother’s Day. I was given flowers (peonies!), a Pandora bead for my bracelets of a lion with a crown and a little bag of my favorite dark-chocolate-covered cherries. In the...

PLEASE SIR, I’D LIKE SOME MORE

It has been an absolutely perfect long weekend. I have been mostly offline and that’s been kind of nice, too. The weather has been breathtaking: spring in all its glory: warm, sunshiny, blue sky beauty. I have magnolia envy and tulip envy and forsythia envy and spirea envy. My hostas are coming up. My columbine is huge and nearly ready to flower. The lilacs behind the garage are on the verge of bursting into bloom. The cherry tree is covered in baby cherries…I mean, white flowers. I read a good book. I took naps. I repotted all the house plants...

RETROSPECTIVE

hristmas Day is here and I have a pocket of time in between all the items on the to-do list, so I thought I would sit down and fire off my yearly retrospective. I know it’s a little early, but we are leaving super early tomorrow morning and I won’t be back until after the new year, and I don’t want to post my retrospective for 2015 in 2016! We’ve had a lovely Christmas, with much time spent with Anders’ family, celebrating his mom’s birthday (and her return home), Christmas Eve with her yesterday and the whole family tonight for...

EK FAMILY CHRISTMAS LETTER

How in the world has it come to this? Writing a Christmas letter for 2015 when I swear I JUST WROTE THE LAST ONE?? Time flies when you’re having fun, I guess! 2015 has been full and busy. Anders had lots of traveling for work, though Liz didn’t have any, for the first time since 2007. 🙁 He went on a ski trip back in January with work colleagues, to the Czech Republic and then again with Karin in February for a week in France. For work, he went to China twice, Thailand, Italy twice, and Germany, most often for...

FINAL COUNTDOWN

Done! Done and dusted! I went shopping after work, for TWO hours at the biggest shopping center in Scandinavia. It was bad but it actually wasn’t as bad as I was dreading, so that was good. And I found a store that sells American candy and junk food like Cheetos and Pop-Tarts that I didn’t know existed. I walked around it drooling. I may have restrained myself. I may not have. I’ll never tell. I was only shopping to get the last stocking stuffers I needed to make sure everyone’s stockings are thoroughly stuffed, and I succeeded so now the...

JINGLE ALL THE WAY

I am steaming through the Christmas to-do list! Tree is up and decorated, house is decorated, Christmas letter is written and ready to be printed, photos are cut and sorted, and the vast majority of my shopping is done. DONE! So late this year, but at least I’m nearly done. I still have a couple of things to get for Karin, stocking stuffers and a present for Anders’ mom, and that’s it! Next week I have to bake cookies for a work fika (I am avoiding baking cookies otherwise…if they’re not in the house, I can’t eat them, see?) and...

GETTING IN THE MOOD

Liz: *sitting on couch, holds up iPad with something funny on it* Hey Martin! Look! Martin: *leans over and looks out the doorway of the computer room on the other side of the house* I’m not a hawk. Today, Martin turns 18. ADULTHOOD! Woot! Do I get a prize for successfully steering my firstborn through to adulthood? Oh wait, I already got one… when he was born. *rimshot* The first email I got this morning was one from the school system officially locking us out of his information. Since he’s now officially an adult, we no longer get to know...
