BLAHGUM

Martin and I were talking, while taking turns mowing the lawn (though, to be fair, he did the lion’s share) about how the other day in school one of his classmates complained that he was always using fancy words, and why couldn’t he just use regular words like the rest of us? I asked him what fancy word he used that caused the complaint and he said, “Ecological”. Which, to be fair, has 5 syllables, which I pointed out to him, (during one of my numerous pauses to rest on the handlebars of the evil push-mower). So I asked him,...

BITS OF TID

Everything is new and green and growing and pulsing with promise…everything but my eyes. They’re red and pulsing with The ITCH. Must get to a pharmacy stat and see what kind of relief I can get. I have a feeling Visine-A isn’t going to cut it this year. I got buzzed by a very loud bumblebee today; so loud that I actually looked up, thinking it was an airplane. Where is my mother? I called and let a message earlier but she hasn’t called back yet. I get antsy when too much time goes by between contact. The kids didn’t...

FOR SOMETHING ELSE BESIDES A HAT RACK

Something that drives me crazy: People who sing “choo” when they mean “you”. I wan’ choo, you’re all I got, etc. Articulate, dammit! My stomach hurts. It’s been hurting for 4 days. I haven’t thrown up, though, so there’s that. Yet. Yesterday, I was supposed to go out to dinner with a colleague here on a business trip from the Boston office and another colleague who is currently on maternity leave, and we ended up going to her house because her husband is out of town, even though originally we were going to have to be at MY house because...

PUT ONE WORD IN FRONT OF THE OTHER AND SOON YOU’LL BE WRITING OUT THE DOOR

Quit’cher bellyachin’ and write! is what my inner author keeps yelling at me. All day I’ve been ignoring it, trying to cover it over with one part of my mental mantle. If you want to write, just write. Put your (figurative) pen to (virtual) paper and let come what may. As a wise commenter said (short of slapping me and yelling “Snap out of it!”): Words are never wasted. There were these things today, things I noticed: the way the water cleared and cleaned the pot I made soup in, the scarlet strip of sunset out across the fields. Pheasants...

THIS, THEN THAT

Good: a gift of REAL cinnamon buns from a friend Not so Good: the amount of sweets I’ve been stuffing my face with lately Good: another several inches of excellent sparkly packing snow. Nope. Still not tired of it 🙂 Not so Good: Anders’ plane being delayed due to the weather Good: a lovely evening of book talk with a bunch of bookworms Not So Good: nobody really liked the book. Sorry, Graham Greene, no love for you. Good: catching up with my family via an ongoing round-robin email Not So Good: haven’t talked to my mom in WEEKS Good:...

ALL OVER THE MAP WITHOUT A PADDLE

Gah. I feel subject-less, blocked, empty of title and content and meaning. I can’t make up another meme, can I? Well, I suppose I could, but credibility, wherefore art thou? What I really want: another day to sleep in, a 3-day weekend, maybe some vacation. A dark den for hibernation. Everyone at work is talking about what days they will be taking off during the holidays but I just grimace: none. My colleague is going on his honeymoon over Christmas and New Year’s and I am working. If my mom decides to come, and if she does, if my brother...

I’VE SOMETHING TO SHOW YOU, STAND HERE

Fragments, figments, shuffled bits of memory. I keep thinking about writing. But I don’t sit down and do it. Am I percolating? Or simply slothful? I miss my interactions here. I need a swift kick in the pants. KICK! You, who write, how do you begin? Have you got an outline? An agenda? A reel tape of remembrances that you can pull from your pocket like ticker tape? Where is the adrenaline and the motivation and the inspiration when you need it? Fragments and figments. I just wrote gifments. Hee! JPGments. Are those the snapshots of your mind in digital...

SCATTERED PLEASURES

Feeling a bit scattered this evening, as though the super-focus I’ve been reveling in all week has finally loosened and blown apart a little bit. Some days I think I am just the same as ever. Other days I can’t believe how much I’ve changed. Just deleted several lines of existential angsty garble, most likely brought on by too-rapidly approaching birthday. Be glad. Some things I am thinking about: 2 weeks in the States! Woot! Can’t wait! 2 weeks with my mom! WOOT! My super salads for lunch have done the trick this week: I’ve lost 1.8 kilos. Good to...

ALL OVER THE MAP

Christina and Rée and Erin are making magic with words. They do it all the time and o! it makes me wild with envy and it makes me stutter with wonder and each word they choose is so right that I find myself holding my breath as I read all the way to the end where the explosive whoosh as my breath releases all at once in a cloud of joy. Some of my blog friends have stopped up their mouths with silence. Did you ever read Harlan Ellison’s I Have No Mouth & I Must Scream? That is what...

WHEN IDEAS FAIL, WORDS COME IN VERY HANDY*

Maybe I have a hole in my head where all the words have leaked out. I looked down around my feet to see if they were there, but all I see is bright green new grass. Sometimes pavement. Sometimes shoes. Where have the words gone? Have they traded in their D’s for M’s and gone inching off, into the grass, greening themselves with protective coloring? Camo-worms. I know that technically I shouldn’t have used apostrophes there with D & M, but I seem to remember that sometimes apostrophes are necessary when the lack of them would cause confusion. You wouldn’t...
