THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT IN FLYINGE

Earlier tonight the full moon was the brightest spot in an otherwise pitch black world. The power went off around 6:30 and stayed off until almost 9…I was just about to start building “Karins wabsit things yahoo” with my daughter when with a whuff everything blacked out. Martin and the twins were playing in the playroom and they ran screaming for flashlights through the hallway and the living room, tripping over furniture and bonking into each other on the way. All photos by Anders Ek We got candles lit all over the house and then I had Martin fetch a...

PARTY PRETENDERS

We’ve been invited to a black tie cocktail party tonight, hosted by a colleague. We only had a week’s notice on the invitation because Francois knew I don’t drink so he thought I wouldn’t be interested in attending a cocktail party but my other colleague Barbara told him he should extend the invitation and let me make up my own mind whether or not we wanted to come. The biggest problem with this invitation wasn’t at all the drinks issue, it was the BLACK TIE. We are just not black tie kind of people. We don’t have any clothing that...

ONE WAY OR ANOTHER

Ways today was not so great: having my colleague burst into tears on the phone due to the personal stress she’s been under lately, with added work stress and jetlag on top worked until 7 p.m. having a really sore neck for the 2nd week in a row. Let GO, cryk!! not having time to go for a walk not having time to edit my book unable to stop thinking about all the truly frightening facts in the book I just finished: An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore Ways today was pretty damn great: FINALLY got my hair cut and...

IT WAS EITHER THIS OR A MEME

It’s been thundering and lightning all evening. And writing that sentence just made me realize that whenever we say that, we are using the word lightning as a VERB, just because it has an ing on the end. Really, it should be lightninging, which I just sat here and said several times out loud to see how it sounded, prompting my husband to say, “what?” in a confused tone from the living room. Last night I had dinner with my oldest girlfriends in Sweden, the women I became friends with first after I moved here, that is…it’s nothing to do...

A CASE OF THE MONDAYS

Don’t sleep well. Worry about everything that needs to get done at work. Get handed multiple last-minute projects the minute you log on to your computer. Nearly get into a screaming match with the colleague responsible for most of them, but manage to just barely restrain yourself. Shut office door and ignore passersby. WORK WORK WORK WORK WORK WORK WORK. Mentally sigh while smiling every time the door is opened and someone says, “Can I just…” Eat a 15-minute lunch. WORK WORK WORK WORK WORK WORK WORK. Manage to get most of the last-minute projects done. You hope. Worry about...

WONDER WHAT MY ORIGINAL 1978 EDITION DARTH VADER HEAD NECKLACE WOULD FETCH ON EBAY?

The head cold had me down most of yesterday, enough that sleeping and editing was about all I could manage, and reading of course, which I can almost always manage. I don’t think it’s fair to be sick on a weekend. I’ve been re-reading the first 2 books of a trilogy in anticipation of reading the 3rd one which my mom had recently sent me. But this morning, when I picked up the 3rd book and opened it, I discovered that it was the SECOND book with a different title and a different cover! ARGH! Apparently, the British and the...

SCOOP: SALMON SOOTHING FOR SORE SWALLOWERS

Both Martin and Karin complained of sore and ticklish throats this week and Karin went through an entire bag and a half of orange and cherry-flavored cough drops…guess who’s got it now? *cough* So, it’s no wonder I was dragging today, pulling myself one step at a time through work towards quitting time and the Tylenol cold medicine calling me from the bathroom cabinet at home. One of the interns at work graduated today and she cooked lunch for a bunch of us. It was one of the most interesting taste-combination meals I’ve ever had, in a good way: salmon...

LIKE SHOVELING THE SIDEWALK BEFORE IT STOPS SNOWING*

This morning, driving through the rain on the way to work, I nearly ran into a rainbow. It was right in front of the car, just came out of nowhere! A patch of sunshine had strayed from between the clouds and was blundering about looking for its way out again. After a few moments of sun-bathed sparkliness it vanished once more for most of the day. But! Out it came again to play in the early evening and how did I choose to celebrate? By cleaning the garage. Why yes, I am clinically insane, thank you for asking! Do you...

BET YOU WISH I’D JUST POST PHOTOS INSTEAD

Melodifestival thoughts: Sandra Dahlberg was robbed. It’s weird to think that an entire country of over 9 million people are all sitting in their living rooms watching the same program on TV. And they announced that an American broadcasting company has bought the rights to the Eurovision concept, so soon all the entire U.S. of A. will be glassy-eyed with song contest fever, too. Any takers that Carola sweeps the whole thing this year? One for the WTF files: A 9th grade art teacher in New York was suspended and may be fired from his 25-year long teaching career for...

DON’T COUNT THE DAYS, MAKE THE DAYS COUNT

I dream weird dreams about babies sliding across floors and down highways, waking only when Anders comes in to tell me he’s leaving for hockey practice, and then the speedy sliding babies are gone. The kids are chattering in the kitchen, they are very loud, but I fall back asleep. No dreams this time, and when I awake again I feel drugged and logy. Stagger up and out of bed, to stand disoriented for a few moments. The sun is indecisive; he might show, he might not. Despite the lateness of the hour, the aquarium is still dark; the fish...
