UHNNNNNNHH

Spending my weekend being sick was not in the plans. I stayed home from work yesterday with a sore throat, fever, aches and chills. UGH. And I’ve now depleted my supply of Advil substantially as it is the only thing that made a significant difference to my symptoms. Twice I had chills so bad that I actually thought my neck and back were spasming. I had things to do this weekend and none of them are getting done as I have no stamina and keep having to go lie down for what I think is just a quick rest and...

HEALTHY AS A …YOU KNOW

I don’t know if every company in Sweden offers their employees health check-ups, but ours does. They’re every other year, fully covered by insurance. You can opt to take a stress test, in addition to the regular tests, and you get to see a doctor to consult about your results afterward. My follow-up was today, and according to my results, I’m a very healthy horse. They checked hearing and sight, lung function, did an EKG, checked pulse, cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, kidney function, liver, metabolism and hemoglobin. Of course, they measure your weight and height, too. The last time...

THE BUSY LIFE

It’s the last day of January and I’ve made it through the first month of the year and last week’s crazy. More ahead, however…the fun never ends! Our first choir practice was last Thursday and I came out of it positively bouncing. I knew I had missed singing but hadn’t really realized how much until I was there. It was SO FUN! There are 2 choir leaders, a young woman who sings and leads and a young man who plays accompaniment on the guitar. They handed out printed sheets of lyrics, not sheet music, which was a little weird for...

IT ALWAYS GOES BACK TO FOOD

In the middle of busy week, though yesterday my massage was cancelled and today 2 meetings at work were, so at least a few fewer things on the list. We had a goodbye fika today for one of our team members (in the events group) that is leaving us this week and moving to Paris, to work for our company as an events manager for the southern Europe region. He’s a truly nice, positive guy so it’s a bummer to have that dynamic leaving our department. The manager that hired him, however, just quit her job and is coming onboard...

TODAY, TONIGHT, RIGHT NOW

Trying to find a dinner date that works for 6 people is like herding cats. Of all suggested dates, there is always at least one person who can’t do it that night. We’re kid-free tonight…both Martin and Karin are staying over with (different) friends in Lund. Anders is watching a movie (I might go join him) and I am working on my recipe book, listening to my Spotify playlist, and eating a small portion of chips and dip. Saturday night multi-tasking! I was pretty much a slug all day. I didn’t do a damn thing except shower, play iPad games,...

SEASONAL BLING

Oh hi there! Here I am with nothing to say. Okay, I have something to say…let’s see if I can dig it out of the inner recesses of my brain. It’s beautiful here today, but OMG so cold. It was -9C when I left for work this morning and despite the fact that sun was shining and the entire sky was this pale, translucent pinky lavender blue all day long it was FREEZING. With a capital BRRRR. The fog was laying low over the fields all last night which meant that this morning everything was covered in inches-long hoarfrost. And...

BUSY BEE BEATS SUPER SLUG

Aren’t you glad for weekends? I am. It’s so necessary to have a couple of days of downtime, where I can do what I need to do, whether that is relaxing and being a total slug or getting all kinds of things done and being a busy bee or some sort of mixture of the two. That is often the case, actually. Today was beautiful, sunny and blue, but very cold. I was productive all weekend; the last load of laundry is in the dryer, the house is clean, the advent lights are down and put away, the plants are...

THE STARS LOOK VERY DIFFERENT TODAY

I was sad at the beginning of the week and I’m even sadder now, after hearing about first David Bowie, and then today, Alan Rickman passing. Both at 69, far too young, and both from cancer. Fuck cancer. It seems everyone loved them, these two very different men. They touched many lives in many ways, for many, many years. A friend of mine from college introduced me to Bowie’s music, along with plenty of other great artists who I had never listened to up to that point. I fell immediately in love with the passion and color of his lyrics...

THE PERFECT MIX OF FOOD AND FUN

Warning: when you’re working on healthy eating and attending WeightWatchers, maybe working on a recipe book of your family favorites is not the best idea. Holy smokes, I’m ravenous now. I’ve been formatting and cutting and pasting recipes all day into the template I’m using for our family recipe book. What a fun and drooly way to spend my very last day of holiday vacation! I was actually a bit worried before I started that I wouldn’t be able to find enough recipes to make a substantial book. Ha. HAHAHA! Turns out, we have a LOT of family favorites. Years...

THE GOOD COUNTRY

I had made a comment to Anders some time ago, that my VW Jetta seems to want to go around 140 k/h, and he agreed…his VW feels the same. He said it was because that is approximately the speed you drive on the autobahn and the cars seem to be engineered to that comfort zone. 🙂 During our road trip through Germany, I got to drive a couple of times on the autobahn, and I’ll tell you what: I loved it. Drivers in Germany drive like you’re SUPPOSED TO DRIVE. They go fast, they stay to the right except when...
