MUSIC IS LIFE ITSELF*

It’s music drought time right now on Spotify’s Discover Weekly. I don’t know what time of year most artists release new music, but everything being suggested to me is at least 10 years old, if not 30 or more. If I wanted to listen to Diana Ross or Linda Ronstadt, Spotify, don’t you think they’d already be on my playlist? I guess all the new music hit before Christmas. So, it’s a perfect time of year for Melodifestivalen. If you’ve never heard of it, you haven’t lived in Sweden. It’s a series of competitions during February and into March, where...

WHERE TO GO, WHAT TO DO

I’m recreating Karin’s resume so that she can apply for university in Copenhagen. I already recreated Martin’s a few months ago before he started job-hunting in earnest. I lost all the original source files when I upgraded to a new work computer a year or so ago and wasn’t thinking about where those particular files were saved. Karin’s been pretty much working steadily since she started as a referee for the soccer leagues in the village where she played, when she was a teenager. I’m not sure why she needs her resume for a university application, but it’s just as...

IT’S JUST ANOTHER DAY

I am awakened several times in the night by my bladder, as I’ve mentioned before. Last night, the second time I got up, even without my glasses, I could see that it had snowed. Everything was white outside, white everywhere. Blurrily white, since no glasses, but still. It figures because I just put my snowboots away (again). Every time I put them away, it snows. I should know better. But it’s all gone again now, since the temperatures were several degrees upward of 0. And raining instead. Even though we’re all sick of winter, I think I’d rather have snow...

AT LEAST I WON’T SWALLOW YOU WHOLE

Oops, missed writing a blog post on the first of the month or saying “Rabbit Rabbit”. Do you do that? I can’t remember when I first heard about that tradition, but it’s been around for a long time, apparently. It was definitely after I moved to Sweden, though, which is weird, since it’s not something Swedes do. If you click on that link and scroll down to the section titled Other Traditions, it talks about saying “Rabbits Rabbits” to get the smoke from a fire to move away from you. THAT one I’ve done since I can remember, probably all...

THE DO-NOTHING MUCH FAIRY WINS AGAIN

It’s been a lazy, if productive in its own way, Saturday. Anders left early this morning for a week of skiing up north with his best friend Mats, and I slept in, and then lazed about in bed until almost 11:30 am. What a slug! But I don’t care, because I have no plans to go anywhere or see anyone this weekend, and I’m enjoying it. The sun has already gone down, now it’s 5 pm, and I’m writing a post after spending the afternoon working on my little projects: finishing up getting all the copy into and formatted in...

SNOWMAGGEDON

We didn’t have a white Christmas though we did have a little bit of snow some weeks beforehand. It’s pretty rare that we get much snow in December at all here in the south of Sweden. But now? Hoo boy. On the 3rd of January we had a severe wind and snow storm that I wrote about on the 4th. That snow and ice stuck around for over a week and we’ve had REALLY cold temperatures until this past weekend when it warmed up to…0 degrees Celsius. They plow in our neighborhood but not very well, and the streets were...

BAD LUCK BUG

My sister has a bad luck bug on her somewhere, and I sure wish we knew how to get it off. All her life, if there was an accident waiting to happen, it was waiting to happen to her. Even when we were kids, she was always the one getting hurt somehow. Maybe because she was much more daring physically than I was, I don’t know. Two years ago she hurt herself badly in an electric scooter accident, ending up with a concussion and horrible bruises on her face. We weren’t sure she’d be able to fly to Europe for...

BETTER AND BRIGHTER

When I say that tidying up my house and cleaning things makes me super happy, I sound like the most boring person in the world, but I don’t care. It does. I like nothing better* than looking around or walking through my home and admiring how nice it looks and all the things in it that make me happy. I LIKE having a neat and tidy place to live. I like a harmonious feeling to the colors and fabrics and patterns that surround me. And I like having things clean. It’s so OCD, but that’s just how it is. Having...

CENTERING MYSELF IN JANUARY

An old friend shared a hilarious article from The Slate on her FB page, which I laughed out loud about: What kind of Muppet are you? Chaos Theory: A Unified Theory of Muppet Types. The basic premise is that everyone is either an Order Muppet or a Chaos Muppet. I’m pretty sure everyone (including most often myself) thinks that I am an Order Muppet, and they’re not wrong, exactly…but there are definitely days when I am a Chaos Muppet. I identify pretty strongly with Cookie Monster, after all, haha! This is also made me laugh recently, even though it was...

SNOW DAY

Today has been such a productive day, though a kind of letdown day, too, because I took mom and Danely to the airport this morning. We have been having another windstorm, and on top of super-cold temperatures and snowstorms, southern Sweden has been socked with winter. It was -4C this morning and not great for driving as it had been snowing all night, though it was mostly blowing around into drifts. We left at 7 am in order to have extra time, and good thing we did. I ended up taking Anders’ car because the Tesla wasn’t charged up enough....
