PRIDE & PLEDGES

So many of us stop ourselves before we even start. A task looms, a challenge overwhelms and before we’ve even tried, the self-defeating statement starting with “I can’t…” comes out of our mouths, or fills our brains and stops up our ears to any other possibilities. I admonish my kids constantly about this kind of thing: “How do you KNOW you won’t like it when you haven’t even tried it?” (then I bid them remember the story of me and sushi: 30 wasted years, to which they are beginning to roll their eyes, not because of its piercing veracity but...

SHE’S MAKING SURE SHE IS NOT DREAMING

I had lunch today with the one club member out of over 180 people who expressed interest in taking over one of the THREE board positions I’m currently handling. 184 members, I just checked. This sort of thing boggles me still, but no longer surprises me, after 13 years. Who turned off summer again? It’s COLD. Also grey, windy and wet. Brrr! Eyjafjallajokull, was it you? Bad volcano! It’s a busy weekend, heavy on kid activities, both of which are outside and the forecast is for more of the cold-windy-grey-and-wet. *sigh* A soccer match tomorrow morning for Karin and Martin...

SPRING IS SPRUNG, THE GRASS IS RIZ

Happy Star Wars Day! May the Fourth be with you! 😀 Spectacular cloudscapes, slanting sunshine, a sudden downpour of rain washed over Flyinge with a fleeting fat rainbow to top it off. The forsythias are so bright, they look like miniature suns. Cherry trees are blossoming: our little cherry is studded with white blooms up and down each branch; harbingers for a bumper crop, I hope! The bird cherry across the ditch has exploded like a stupendous slo-mo popcorn tree. Sparrows are nesting in one of the birdhouses on the side of the playhouse and pheasant calls ratchet through the...

MOSTLY DERISION

Like Megsie, I often deliberately wait a day or so after writing a post, in order to let my hordes handful of readers read and comment…I don’t want to leave anyone behind, after all. Ahem. Actually, and again like Megsie, who might as well have written this part of my post FOR ME only on HER blog, most of the time, when I sit down to write a post or at least have the intention of beginning a post, I end up blank, with nothing coming to mind, despite the dozens of excellent ideas and topics that zinged at me...

MIND GAMES

Happy May Day! It’s hard to believe it is already the first day of the fifth month of the year. Spring is fully sprung and the zillion shades of neon green greet my wondering eyes wherever they wander. All the grass is new and the old winter residue and beigeness of last year’s growth has been covered over completely now by the new growth. Yesterday was Walpurgis Eve and we celebrated, as we usually do, with our friends Mats & Annelott at a bonfire held in their overgrown back acre, with several other couples and 3 dogs, one a new...

BITS OF TID

Everything is new and green and growing and pulsing with promise…everything but my eyes. They’re red and pulsing with The ITCH. Must get to a pharmacy stat and see what kind of relief I can get. I have a feeling Visine-A isn’t going to cut it this year. I got buzzed by a very loud bumblebee today; so loud that I actually looked up, thinking it was an airplane. Where is my mother? I called and let a message earlier but she hasn’t called back yet. I get antsy when too much time goes by between contact. The kids didn’t...

NO ENTERTAINMENT IS SO CHEAP AS READING; NOR ANY PLEASURE SO LASTING*

When the kids were little, we read to them nearly every night, as part of the bedtime routine. Sometimes Anders would read to them both, sometimes I would, and sometimes each of us would be reading to one child. They picked the books, from the several shelves of picture books we had: English books sent to us from my mom, birthday present books, much-loved and somewhat battered copies from my own collection of children’s books, and Swedish books purchased monthly from the 2 mail-order book clubs we belonged to then: Go’Boken and Bonniers Barnbokklubb. Most of the latter are long-gone...

SIGNS OF THE END TIMES

What a hellish couple of days this has been, and now more bad news to add the icing on to the bogus cake. Yesterday, when I got home, Karin was playing on the computer. I kicked her off for a bit to check email and catch up on some quick online errands, and then we went to the store and then came home and had dinner. After dinner, she went back to finish her last half hour of play, and couldn’t log in. I tried, but I couldn’t log in either. So I logged in as an administrator but quickly...

ASHES TO ASHES ALL FALL DOWN!

Sunny day, blowing the clouds away, and all I think when I’m inside is OMG the house is so dusty! EEK. Dust bunnies! Dust mice! Dust ELEPHANTS! A dust lake on every surface. ACK. Dusting is so boring. And so USELESS. All it seems to really do is rearrange the stuff. It never goes away, not really. Don’t think about it too closely, though, or it will really gross you out. I forgot to water the grass seed my husband spread out in the backyard where the pool used to be, again tonight. Oops. I wish he was home. I...
