HOLIDAY PREP

It’s nearly Halloween. I have the big bowl of candy ready and the kids are coming home tomorrow night to carve the pumpkins and decorate. Anders is gone this week but will be home on Thursday at some point, though I don’t know if he’ll make it for the trick-or-treat hours. Kirstin hosted the annual (3x makes it a yearly event, right) AIC adult party on Friday. I didn’t really dress up at all, since I don’t really like dressing up. I stuck my bat deelybobbers on and wore a bright orange shirt. That’s as dressed up as I like...

SUNDAY UPDATE

Apart from the restricted diet I’m on this past week and today, this has been an excellent weekend. We’ve had beautiful, warm autumn weather with lots and lots of sunshine, and a to-do list that has every item but one now checked off. Lots of laundry, cleaning, and yardwork. Anders has harvested the rest of the potatoes and a handful of late carrots and put the vegetable garden to bed for the winter. He took in the porch swing (I put the rest of the porch furniture away last week) and I washed the canopy cover. The house is clean...

UGH

How many times do I think about writing and then don’t do it? Every day, nearly. It feels like my entire life is centered around medical issues right now which is no fun for me and definitely no fun for anyone else to read about. More later as events warrant. Mood: cranky Music: none, just me

FFS

For Pete’s sake, it’s October, and I haven’t written anything in, like, 2 weeks. Despite all the good intentions my road to blog hell is paved with. And who is Pete, anyway? Dear Google, give me the deets. Google coughs it up immediately! According to the Oxford English Dictionary, “for Pete’s sake” came into use more than a century ago and prompted similar sayings such as “for the love of Pete” in 1906. It was a substitution of St. Peter because that was less offensive than taking the name of the Lord or Christ in vain. Interesting. It could also...

THE ONLY WAY TO DO ALL THE THINGS YOU’D LIKE TO DO IS TO READ*

Karen Sommerfeld asked her followers on Facebook what present they had gotten as a child, that made the biggest impression on them or that they loved the most, and the comments section exploded with people reminiscing about Spirograph, Lite-Brite, Barbies, and various other things like bikes and toy keyboards and perfumed pens. I immediately thought of the giant Barbie head I got one year for Christmas that you could put makeup on and style her hair. Not terribly interested in either makeup or hair styling after that, but it definitely got played with. I had a Spirograph, too. And of...

RATTLING AROUND

There’s always a lot rattling around in my head. Mostly things that need to be done, or at least not forgotten about. But also, thoughts about my family, the book I am reading, what to fix for lunch or for dinner, thoughts about work, and other miscellaneous crap. I used to be better about writing about all these things online. So did everyone else. I’m the last blogger standing. At least maybe last personal blogger standing. There are people who seem to have transitioned blogging to newsletters, so I guess they count. I used to spend hours online reading other...

GOING AND COMING

We moved Karin to Copenhagen over the past week. She moved in on Tuesday last week, and it was a super easy move, as she didn’t have so much furniture, and only a few boxes and miscellaneous other stuf. She and her best friend Elsa actually had the trailer filled before Martin even arrived in the morning to help. So we drove over to Copenhagen, and her new apartment is really nice. It’s a big 3-bedroom, brand new, on the south side of Copenhagen, quite near the water. We got her all unloaded, and then Martin and I went and...

DOWN AND OUT

We had a fire drill at the office this morning. We’ve been in the new building since 2022, even though it was ready before that. Since we were 100% at home, we didn’t get back into the office for awhile, and then only gradually. I can’t remember that we have actually had a fire drill before since we’ve been back. I know that there have been drills, but not ones where we had to evacuate. We’re on the 7th floor, so it’s a long way down when you can’t take the elevator. It’s longer when you have a bad knee...

NOTHING MUCH TO SAY BUT I’M SAYING IT ANYWAY

It’s September, the weather is fantastic, though the nights are getting longer and darker. We’ve had gorgeous summer weather all week. In fact, it’s supposed to get up to 30C tomorrow! That’s 86F! In September! Unheard of. That’s climate change for you. I’m perfectly fine with it, as I’m back at work and not sweltering anywhere and it cools down drastically in the evenings and the house stays cool during the day as long as we have the blinds pulled in the living room. Clear blue skies, too. Perfect! I don’t really have anything much to write about. Crazy busy...

GOOD STUFF

I just picked another big handful of snap peas and found 2 decent-sized cucumbers, a week after I thought we were done with both for sure. Today was a nice easy, stress-free start to work after 3 weeks of a very relaxing vacation. I’m very glad that it was so, and that a bad day didn’t wreck all the recharging I did. Almost everyone is back from vacation, though one of my team members is sick. Hugs all around this morning! I had plenty to do, and a fun layout to work on, plus a new project to begin (the...
