I wonder if zombies ever feel like they are going through life like humans? It seems to be worse in the winter, that troglodyte feeling, of shuffling from bed to work to home to bed and around again, arms outstretched, feet flat and clomping. The sun was out today, and I would have stretched to it and turned, following like a flower, in fact I could feel my yearning pushing at the walls of our office building. Alas, by the time I left, it was pitch out, dark like it was 10 o’clock, and it was only a few minutes...
Martin is in bed, tucked up in his red-white-and-blue American quilt, with his new Animal Fact Book propped open upon his knees. He’ll read in bed until he drops off around 10. Karin, after being tucked in, turned off all her lights except her lava lamp and proceeded to “read” a book using a flashlight. She fell asleep within minutes. It’s traditional in Sweden to wake up the birthday kid with presents in bed before getting up to face the day. I find this a bizarre tradition since the last thing I want to be is cheerful at 7 a.m....
People keep friending me. It makes me feel so cool! I feel like one of the cool kids every time! Do you people know something about me that I don’t know? Because I assure you, I am not one of the cool kids. Aw Cawntrar. hahaha! I always wanted to write that. It drives me crazy when people write “wallah!” but I can understand why. If you’ve only ever heard it said, and never seen it written, how would you know it WASN’T “wallah!” ?? A word I was asked to spell today and then had to go look up...
3 julbords in 5 days is just way too much. I’m julborded out and it’s the FIFTH of December. The Swedes eat basically the same feast for every holiday but they really pile it on for Christmas. Julbord, for those of you who have never been initiated into this particular Swedish extravaganza, is, literally, “Christmas table.” It traditionally consists of a fish course of up to THIRTY different kinds of pickled herring (herring in tomato sauce, herring in mustard sauce, herring in cream sauce, herring in dill, herring in garlic sauce, herring in onion, pickled FRIED herring, herring with you-name-it....
Where the heck did my weekend go?? It’s 10 p.m. on Sunday night, and despite sleeping in this morning, I feel like it’s just zipped on by with me whirling around in its wake with a dizzy expression on my face. I can’t even remember what we did yesterday. Did we do something yesterday? Ah yes, we did. And today we went to our friends Mats & Annelott for the afternoon, and a nice dinner of delicious pizza. Dear Garlic, Why you gotta be like that when you know I love you so? Uncomfortably Yours, Liz Another crazy week ahead:...
I have Christmas on the brain at the moment. It’s because I finished doing the house decorating today, with Martin’s help. All we have left in boxes are the tree ornaments, but we won’t be getting a tree until the 17th, because tomorrow we’re visiting friends and next weekend we’ve got Martin’s birthday party on Saturday and about 42 million calendar commitments on Sunday, of which we’ve chosen 3 to attend. I think. It’s hard to keep track. I’ve started the layout for our annual Christmas newsletter and gotten all my Christmas cards out of the back of the closet,...
A lot of what’s been on my mind lately has been work-related and not in a good way, and since I won’t talk about work here, I feel like my not being able to talk about work here has been sort of blocking my being able to talk about ANYTHING here. I could lock up the post, I suppose, and get it out, but to be honest, I’m still chewing several things over in my head, and I don’t really want or need advice, because it’s not that kind of thing, it’s more general observations and a bit of discomfort...
It’s just turning after midnight, but I must post 2 things before I go and dive into bed: Happy Happy Birthday Wishes to georgiamars! Hope your day was a great one! Really Great Writing Out There Right Now: Throwing in the Towel, and Picking it up again Very busy Christmas partying, back soon, I promise!
12 bags of cookies. oh god. I managed to get them all into the freezer except 1 bag of the succulently titled FUDGE PUDDLES, which in reality are more like double-stuffed-addictioncup-porncookies. I ate 3 of those upon arrival home and then Anders came in and in plaintive tones asked, “Can I have one?” at which point I growled and snapped at his tentatively reaching hand. “Can’t you go see what’s in the other 11 bags?” I hissed, “Since there are probably cookies there I DON’T like?” Then he held me at arm’s length, wrestling the bag out of my frantic...
