WILD LIFE

We are rising, light-filled, toward the longest day. Morning after morning breaks clear across the wide sky and pours sunshine over us in spate. If it were possible to be filled to the brim with sunshine, I would be, but it keeps on coming and it’s never enough, here in a northern country where grey skies, rain and darkness hold so much sway. Contrails stitch comet-needles across the roof of the sky, and clouds have pasted themselves unmoving along the horizon. When the sun lowers it singes all the edges, turning everything rose-red, pink-gold, orange and lavender. Out watering in...

POETRY THURSDAY

Weddings and marriages and relationships have been on my mind a lot lately, understandably so, since my brother got married a few weeks ago and Anders and I celebrated our 10-year anniversary. What makes it work? A strong sense of commitment through ups and downs and good and bad. An understanding that loving someone is not necessarily the same as BEING in love all the time and that that’s okay. The sense of your world righting itself when your loved one returns home from a week away. The deep, knitted-tight feeling that permeates everything about your life together. For What...

BLABBITER LICKUM, INDEED

Thinking: Where does all the money go? ACK! Answering: “That’s the one with the black and white ball, right?” every time someone asks me if I’m excited about the Soccer World Championships that start tomorrow. Planning: A party for 25 people at my house tomorrow evening. oy! That added up fast. Hoping: That the unbelievably wonderful weather (blue sky, sunshine, cool breeze, warm temps) will continue. Wishing: That the photos we took on the trip with the new camera would somehow edit themselves and then post themselves online because I just don’t have time. Recommending: Really Great Writing Out There...

THE ENVELOPE, PLEASE

Busy days and houseguests are not leaving me much time to either journal or catch up or do much commenting, but thanks to having had the foresight to arrange for a judge for the marriage-advice-poetry contest, I have a post, with content! First of all, thank you to everyone who participated! I hope you had as much fun thinking up your entries as Liz Elayne and I had reading them, …along with my brother and his new bride who will doubtless take ALL of your advice to heart immediately. 😀 Liz Elayne took her job very seriously and was in...

BLINDED BY THE LIGHT

You might think this photo means I am just a material girl, but what it really means is that he listened and gave me just what I wanted just when I wanted it: his heart.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE AND A CONTEST!

I don’t know about you guys, but I get twitchy when I’m without computer access for an extended period…and that is what is looming up in my face RIGHT NOW. We are leaving at o’hell early in the morning to fly to Germany to celebrate my baby brother’s nuptials with the whole fam damily. Wish me luck singing! studiozoe and her Tobey are housesitting for us, for which favor I am very grateful. 🙂 And I will wish YOU luck with a contest that I have devised to keep you occupied (and get comments, lots and lots of pretty, pretty...

LIFE IS A LONG PREPARATION FOR SOMETHING THAT NEVER HAPPENS*

Before a trip, my brain kicks into overdrive months in advance. I start with mental lists of things to remember, sticking little virtual post-it notes all over my gray matter. One of the ones I stuck up more than 8 months ago for the trip we’re leaving on this week read “Get Karin’s passport renewed” and the little post-it note was only JUST wadded up and thrown away a couple of days ago. I start early doing this because it gives me plenty of time to prioritize and remember things: get prescriptions filled, register to have the mail held, buy...

PROBABLY IN THE SAME CATEGORY: ASKING QUESTIONS OF YOUR READERS

The rapeseed is blooming! There’s a huge swath of neon-yellow in the field behind our house and when you crest the hill from Lund you can see a green and brown and yellow patchwork quilt spread out in front of you, with rapeseed glowing in giant yellow squares and skinny pointy windmills turning slowing in the breeze. If you start counting quickly, just as you go over the top, you can count 22 of them before you reach the bottom. I am very glad that the Eurovison Song Contest is over for another year. What a frightshow. I must apologize...
