BEAT IT

Reading several people’s blogs/journals about their childhood with angry fathers made me realize once again how lucky I was. My family wasn’t spectacularly dysfunctional, and my dad didn’t start drinking until I was a teenager. Or at least I didn’t notice the effects until I was a teenager. My parents were spankers, within the limits of reasonableness, until I was about 5-6, then I don’t remember being spanked except once, and I deserved it. Seems like everyone got spanked in the 70’s 🙂 We were living in Nebraska so I would have been somewhere around 8-9 years old. We had...

AMERICAN PATRIOT

I have a policy never to argue politics or religion with anyone because I believe it’s nearly impossible to change anyone’s mind. I think people have to get to that point on their own initiative, and that the politics and religion of their childhood will often, although thank goodness not always, be the most influential factor in a person’s adult philosophy. Living as an American expatriate means living in a dichotomy of feelings about the country of my birth. It’s even harder since I was raised as a military brat with all the subtle and unsubtle indoctrination and propaganda that...

EH? WHAT’S THAT, SONNY?

What a silly and stimulating evening I had yesterday, trading horrible puns with ozswede and then watching West Wing, one of the only shows currently showing on Swedish television, or anywhere for that matter, that assumes you are intelligent and expects you to keep up. Anders swears it’s making his brain cramp 🙂 Speaking of Anders, my poor husband is having a very bad day. He didn’t have a massage either, this morning, like I did, which is helping me roll with the punches. The asphalt crew that started working on our street this morning at 7 a.m. told him...

FEAR OF FLYINGE

I meant to write “Fear of Flying” as the subject line but I automatically wrote “Flyinge” and I wonder if if was a Freudian typo. haha! Anders leaves on Wednesday for a 2-week business trip to the U.S. and since this is the 3rd time he’s been gone in 3 months, I’m having to face the fact that my fear of flying extends to my loved ones as well. Even while I know that the statistics are against anyone I know actually being killed in a plane crash, I still get jittery every time either I or anyone I care...

FIX

Well, I’ve confirmed what I already knew but was in semi-denial about. I’m addicted. Although, I have to say, I did not nag my husband EVEN once to stop playing that stupid car racing game and get the computer put back where it belonged so I could get online, dammit! 🙂 haha! Yesterday is over, and we’ll just leave it there. Today was pretty mellow. Being the superniceinfactunbelieveablynice wife that I am, I cleaned up the horrendous mess of dishes and bottles and glasses and whatnot wreckage from a very successful men’s dinner party last night while my extremely hungover...

INCOMMUNICADO

I’ll be testing the limits of my internet addiction this weekend. Anders is hosting a men’s dinner party (MÃ¥rtens GÃ¥s) tomorrow night and they are going to be playing Superbike 2001 in the living room with two sets steeringwheel/joystick/whatever the hell they use setups. Which means the computer is being ripped from its comfortable nest of cables and I won’t be able to get online the rest of the weekend until he puts it back together, most likely on Sunday after getting tired of my incessant harping reminders. carrieb is in fine form tonight. “Inject me with your sperm!” LOLOL!!...
