NOT FALLING FAR FROM THE TREE

You’ve all heard those stories a dozen times. You roll your eyes when your uncles slap their knees and explode into laughter before regaling their audience with yet another rendition of “remember when.” You can recite the anecdotes word for word, the ones they tell over and over, your parents, your grandparents, your cousins; that shared history which is rubbed into your skin and twined about your neck. At least you think you can. When you stop and think, how much is left? How much will you remember? How much gets passed on to enrich the understanding your children and...

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE TIME THAT PASSES

Blah. I think I have the “only one week left of vacation” blues. Everyone seems to be rubbing me the wrong way, and I seem to be returning the favor, although certainly without intention. Some things that have happened to others recently have been on my mind and I can’t seem to shake them. Every year on the last day of April, we celebrate Walpurgis Eve with our friends Mats & Annelott, who throw an annual bonfire barbeque to which they invite all of their friends. Most of the other friends are people we only see that one evening each...

WIRED 4 SOUND

My MOTHER is giving me shit about the lack of substantial updates in my journal lately. Boys, girls, pens, pencils…what’s wrong with this picture?? GET YOUR OWN DAMN BLOG, MOM! Haaaa! Although, considering what happened the last time I managed to persuade a family member to start their own LJ, I guess we’ll just let sleeping blogs lie. I organized the couple-of-year’s worth of photos that had accumulated in the study yesterday and put them into 2 photo albums. I realized, while I was sorting them, that most of them had come from other people’s cameras: my mom’s, my brother’s,...

EXCUSES FOR PROCRASTINATION, PART THE FIRST

I had all the photos from Germany picked out and lined up in Paintshop to edit this afternoon and then we got a summer thunderstorm that raced in and blew up things, including our electricity, downpoured like a mother for 15 minutes, setting off our car alarm, and then disappeared as quickly as it had arrived. Later, we had rain WITH sunshine. Sweden. If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes. Upshot: reboot, all photos have to be opened and chosen again. Tomorrow, perhaps. Instead, I give you the following…

I’M NO GOOD AT NOTHING

I just can’t do it. I can’t sit still. Well, okay, I can, but not for long. And I can’t not be doing anything. (can’t not be not doing anything?) I have to be doing stuff. This is why I like work so much, because it lets me do something all the time and then the not doing anything is okay. But 2 weeks of not doing anything? Not doing it. (haaa) I don’t know whether to be glad that I’m getting all these little projects done that I normally never have time for, or disgusted with myself that I...

A VACATION IS HAVING NOTHING TO DO AND ALL DAY TO DO IT IN*

I feel like I’m cheating every time I do a photo post instead of writing. And since I did 2 in a row, I definitely have that hands-on-hips, stern-look-over-the-eyeglasses, slight-shaking-of-head thing going on. Any minute now, my mental teacher will wag a warning finger at me as I hang my head in shame. Aja baja, fuskis! as my daughter would say. Being on vacation at home feels very slothful. Reducing the world’s population of flies one THWACK at a time does not make for interesting journal entries, and neither, I am sure, does anyone want to read about my ruthless...

I EVEN HANDWASHED THE KITCHEN CHAIR SEAT CUSHIONS

Things That Made Me Miss My Childhood Today: Googling the game Zoom Schwartz Pifigliano after seeing it mentioned in one of my old scrapbook journals. We played it at day camp. And Buzz. Those were fun games. Why don’t we play those anymore? Copying the poem Animal Crackers for jackiejj. My mom used to read that to me, along with the poems about the Gingham Dog & the Calico Cat, and the Sugarplum Tree, and Over in the Meadow, and the little girl with the little curl right in the middle of her forehead. Reading a chapter from Charlie and...
