UHHHN

I honestly don’t remember the last time I was this sick. I’ve spent the majority of the past 72 hours huddled in a ball, fully dressed with 2 thick sweatshirts on, under 3 heavy blankets…shivering. If I’m NOT shivering, I’m sweating and throwing everything madly off. If I’m not sweating OR shivering I’m laying poleaxed with a headache and a sharp pain in my shoulders and neck as they try to crawl up around the top of my head where shoulders and neck have no right to be. My cheekbones feel like sharp glass. My throat keeps surprising me with...

EVEN CATERPILLARS COULD FLY IF THEY WOULD JUST LIGHTEN UP

Fighting off a cold makes me want to burrow under as many blankets as I can pile on the bed. The summer-weight king-size thin blanket that really needs to be put away now that it’s so cold in the bedroom The 80’s comforter in teal, burgundy and cream that I can’t bring myself to part with, though it’s starting to look a little ragged. It was the comforter that I bought myself when I moved into my own place in Chicago. The heavy winter duvet that I still haven’t put the duvet cover on because it’s such a pain in...

BLEAH

My stomach hurts. I blew off choir tonight because of it. The first time I could go, and I’m missing it, but you know what? I’m just not in the mood for it, and the upset stomach was the straw to my camel’s back. We finally found a choir leader but she started 2 weeks ago and one of those weeks was cancelled because her kid was sick. It’s 2.5 months into the term and the choir has only met once! šŸ™ And I’m feeling like it’s not even worth it to go this term. Maybe I should just wait...

SPOOKING IT UP IN DENMARK

Halloween is just not a big thing in continental Europe, not like it is in the States, though it originated in Britain. It’s always been one of my favorite holidays, though I’d be hard put to describe exactly why I like it better than, say, Christmas, which is admittedly a close runner-up. There’s just always been something magical about it, and maybe it’s just because I like cats and the color orange and full moons and pumpkin pie. Maybe it’s because it falls in autumn, my favorite time of the year. After 10+ years in Sweden, where Halloween is pretty...

DID SOMEONE SAY CHEESE, GROMIT?

What is with the increase in spam? I never used to get spam on my yahoo address and now it’s barreling in. And why does YahooMail feel the need to make me click YES DAMMIT twice by asking me if I’m sure (are you sure? are you? huh? huh?) if I want to delete everything in my Spam folder?! If I didn’t want to delete it, I’d MOVE it, YahooMail…DUH. Argh. Also, I cannot believe I lost a game of Scrabulous despite coming up with the word QUAHOG on a triple letter score. How depressing! Mmmmm…melty Brie. While I was...

IN WHICH LIZ FAKES YOU OUT WITH LOTS OF TYPING

Too much going on which is calling me away from here right now. I’m around—just not very vocal, it seems. I’d write a list of what’s going on this week/month/season but I suspect everyone would just yawn and be all “yeah, you’re busy, what else is new?” If you had just gotten a big wooden sideboard with 2 drawers and 2 cabinet doors on the front with carved apples with leaves in squares in the center of them, what color would you paint it? It’s currently white, which we don’t want. Anders suggested grey (probably to stave off my penchant...

THIS JUST IN

Who’s on Facebook? And why? What are you doing there? Do we all really have this much time to fart around on the internet? Good lord, what did we DO with ourselves back in the dark ages? Remember board games? I miss those. *** Do you have “pet names” for things in your house or food or stuff that you refer to when your kids or your significant other are around by words or names other than their real ones? The kids call my imported sugar-free cherry Kool-Aid Mama’s Saft (Mama’s juice). And we call summer sausage “pricky korv” because...

UP, UP AND AWAY

Yesterday, it was so clear you could see forever, and when you’re 15,000 feet up in an airplane on a clear day, you very nearly can. It was overcast in Frankfurt when we took off but as we headed north the clouds dispersed until we were flying over Denmark: lots and lots of very flat land surrounded by lots and lots of water. What struck me most about the sun-slathered landscapes was how foreign the land looked. It didn’t look as if it was LAND. It didn’t look, by the edges of the shorelines, as if it continued down into...

AAAH, AT LAST, A POST!

Today, in its loosely defined state of 33 hours awake so far, involved 3 airplanes, 9 hours total of layover/airport-wait time and a train, plus two 50-pound suitcases. I am very glad to be home. Things I boggled at, the short list: The Butt Hut (bwahahahaha!), ketchup-flavored potato chips, THE PRICES, the fact that I spent an hour and a half in the bookstore and came away with ONE BOOK for myself, the amount of strip malls in America, the variety of goodies on the market with Reese’s name on them. Things I wanted to eat while in the States...
