NEVER SAY NEVER

What job would you never take? What food would you never eat? What place would you never visit? What lie would you never tell? Four quick questions off the top of my head, just to jump-start myself and get the writing juices flowing. People say “Never say never” all the time, because fact is, lots of people say they’ll never do or say something and later find themselves saying or doing that very thing under circumstances they could never have imagined years earlier. “I’ll never be like my dad,” a teenager yells, only to catch himself years later saying the...

A CERTAIN SLANT OF LIGHT

Craving sunshine nearly as much as I’m craving snow, I was delighted to see the sun smiling in a bright blue sky when I woke, vacation-late as usual, this morning. Anders and the kids were headed out the door to their grandparents; Anders is going to help them paint their bathroom this week, and I, quite honestly, am glad of some alone time. I worked on my editing project for a couple of hours and ate a big salad for lunch, and then the call of the sunshine overwhelmed me at last and pushed me out the door. Brrr! It...

TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT

We’ve been at our wit’s end with Martin’s eating habits lately. Karin’s no walk in the park either, for that matter. She doesn’t like chocolate, cheese, bread or sauces. Martin eats his meals with tiny mouse bites and gags easily and won’t eat anything that has the slightest discoloration or oddness to it: if it’s too hard or too dry or too anything, he just won’t eat it. Both of them are very decided about what edibles they “don’t like” or “won’t eat” but strangely, they’re both usually pretty good about at least trying new things. Yesterday, we were trying...

NOT FISHING, JUST PONDERING

Liz: *grimacing at Martin* YOU! Get in bed! *stands up and zombie chases him into his bedroom* Martin: *laughs all the way* Liz: BED! NOW! Martin: I’m not scared of you! I’ve got a…*looks wildly around, grabs the first thing at hand* …a BOOK! Liz: *stops short, puts hands on hips, mocks* oooo…knowledge is scary! Liz & Martin: *giggle madly* I’ve been thinking about trying to write a post a day for, I don’t know…a week? A month? The whole year? I don’t think it will happen, though, and I’ve actually come to the conclusion that I get more comments...

LIGHTING THINGS UP

Turns out staying up until 3:30 a.m., after eating a huge feast and standing outside in the cold for an hour with your neck craned will decimate you nearly as much as if you were drunk while doing it. At least if you are 29, like me. Even though I’ve been in training all of vacation for the staying up until 3 a.m. part of New Year’s Eve, today was pretty much a complete wash. The teenager blew us off last night, so we were only 15, but man, the 5 kids (2 of whom were ours) made it feel...

RETROSPECTIVE

It’s traditional and expected to look back on the year that has just passed and reflect over what has happened, what has changed and what one has accomplished. 2008 felt kind of like a placeholder year to me; a year where we kept the status quo: no real major event took place, a year that felt sort of business as usual, for better or for worse. It doesn’t feel, upon reflection, that anything really really bad or really really good happened to me or to my family, which seems like an acceptable way to get through 365 days, actually. In...

THIS IS AS WOUND-DOWN AS I GET

Walking in a city is energizing, especially during the mellandagarna, the “between days” after Christmas and before the New Year. Even though people can be a bit crabby thanks to the crowds and the long lines, it gets your pulse moving to be surrounded by so much life. So much going on, so much to look at. I never used to like shopping all that much, especially clothes shopping (still don’t, actually) unless there were books or music involved, but I love window-shopping and just browsing along. I left the house in the early afternoon and drove to Malmö with...

NOT-QUITE-END-OF-YEAR BLUES

Itchy, restless feeling all day, couldn’t settle, couldn’t relax. Even reading didn’t help. I kept thinking I should get out, go shopping or something; after all, there are sales everywhere and why not take advantage of them? Except that we don’t NEED anything and we just GOT a lot of stuff, it being Christmas and all, and the last thing I really need to do is go spend money unnecessarily on things we don’t need. Plus, I couldn’t decide where to go. None of the shopping centers around the area seemed at all appealing and they all have essentially the...

MERRY MERRY MERRY!

If you are sad, we wish you joy. If you are sick, we wish you health. If you are lonely, we wish you friendship. We wish you peace and love and cookies! May this holiday, whether bright with sunshine or smothered in snow, be the start of a year full of blessings for all our family and friends, wherever they may be around this great glowing globe.
