MIND GAMES

Martin and I were leaving the house to go for a walk this afternoon, after I got home early from work. We stepped outside the door, and as I was locking it, with my back to the backyard, I said to him, “Martin, go close the playhouse door.” His eyes got all huge and he said, “How did you know the playhouse door was open?? You’re not even looking at it!!” as he started running away behind me, toward the playhouse (aaah, the never-ending pleasure of instant obedience). “I’m a mom! I have eyes in the back of my head!”...

HONESTLY!

What a busy week! It seems only yesterday that I posted but it was Sunday! And now it’s Thursday! Zooooooom. Not over yet, either. It’s been all AWC, all the time. I’m officially no longer the Editor, which is a weird feeling. I went through this several yeas ago, when I gave up the Editor position for a year and took a break from the board work, though I helped out a bit with the web work that time. This time, I’ve just moved positions on the board, and am still 1/2 of the webteam, which probably means nearly as...

AT THE END OF THE DAY

Read a great book: People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks Watched a great movie: The Fall by Tarsem Singh Looked at a beautiful thing: Amazing paper craft castle Laughed really hard: Regretsy (warning, some NSFW) Friday night was the 25-year anniversary party for my company. The theme was The 80s and for weeks people have been talking about what they were going to wear, going shopping at second-hand stores and debating what does and doesn’t define 80s style. You have no idea how old it made me feel. Probably like my parents did when we had 50s or 60s...

THINGS I COULD DO TODAY

My family is gone on a weekend Scout camp. Martin left last night with the older kids…they were planning to sleep outside in “wind-protected lean-tos” if the weather cooperated last night. Since it was clear with a brilliant bright moon I hope they did. Today it’s grey and raining: not so fun for a camp, but Anders and Karin left this morning with their backpacks stuffed to the brim and smiles on their faces so I’m sure they’ll be having a good tiime regardless. I woke up at 7:30 when Anders did, and promptly fell back asleep until they came...

EVENING POEM #1

For the ones who bring it I started to name you, tossing out monikers here on the evening air so you would hear You would know how much you matter You would think: wow! little ‘ol me? Your names, a litany of light that goes Around and around this great big globe A tangled connection of something bigger than the earth It reaches from me to you All the way round and back again I hold on with both hands and call your names: yes, you.

KEEP YOUR ARMS & LEGS INSIDE THE RIDE

Holy crap, it’s the last day of September! I am boggled by another year bending to the end again. If I look over my shoulder I can see April, the April that WAS, just disappearing out of the corner of my eye. It was spring just a minute ago, wasn’t it? Consolation: it will be spring again in a sec. Just wait. This morning there was a silver skin of ice on the windows of the car. The sun isn’t far enough up to break over the roofs of the houses that keep the car in shadow so I had...

AT LEAST IT’S MORE THAN 140 CHARACTERS, EH?

I suppose that I may not complain about the dearth of posts from people I want to read when I have been lax about writing myself. Thinking of that was enough to make me un-duff and start writing. If only it was always so easy. Also, if only it resulted in a post worth reading! HAR! suckahs! 😛 It was damned cold out today—fall arrived with a snap and a vengeance. It took no prisoners in its announcement of arrival. Cold, rain, gusting winds, grey skies. BRRR…now I’m sort of bumming about my yummy lunch salads because it’s kind of...

I’VE SOMETHING TO SHOW YOU, STAND HERE

Fragments, figments, shuffled bits of memory. I keep thinking about writing. But I don’t sit down and do it. Am I percolating? Or simply slothful? I miss my interactions here. I need a swift kick in the pants. KICK! You, who write, how do you begin? Have you got an outline? An agenda? A reel tape of remembrances that you can pull from your pocket like ticker tape? Where is the adrenaline and the motivation and the inspiration when you need it? Fragments and figments. I just wrote gifments. Hee! JPGments. Are those the snapshots of your mind in digital...

WHAT IF FEELS LIKE

Even though I passed a truck piled high with sugar beets the other day on the highway, just as I was driving down the hill where I could see the plumes from the sugar factory smokestacks cottoning their way into the air, and even though the chill in the evening air is noticeable, and even though the speed limit through our little village has been lowered to its autumnal crawl zone of 30 MPH (thanks to those those same sugar-beet trucks), it does not FEEL like fall. It feels like summer. Still. Still summer. What with the endless cloudless blue...
