NO ONE IS YOU AND THAT’S YOUR SUPERPOWER*

I’ve managed a lot of posts this month, and I am keeping at myself to sit down and write something even when I don’t, like right now, feel I have anything specific to write about. I don’t like most of the writing prompts I find online, as they feel a bit forced (what’s your biggest regret? What one thing do you wish you could do better? What superpower do you wish you had? Fuck if I know.) Lots of the writing prompts also seem to be for NOVEL writers, BOOK writers, SERIOUS writers, though I suppose if they need prompts, they’re just regular writers, or writing dilettantes, like me.

Even when I google “blog prompts” they don’t seem to be the kind of thing I’m looking for, and blogging these days is so different than it was back in the mid-to-late-2000s when EVERYONE was blogging. Back then it was about ordinary people writing about their own lives, their own thoughts, their own experiences. Nowadays, so many blogs are written by companies and corporations, or they are so subject-specific that they might as well be: travel blogs, shopping blogs, technology blogs, website blogs…in short, business blogs. Bleah.

If you’re not writing for stats and hits and readers and engagement, then none of those are for you. They’re not for me. I don’t advertise this journal (never did) and it’s not part of an automatic community like it was on LiveJournal where it was easier for people with like-minded situations or interests to find you. I miss it, but I also don’t think that it would fit into my current lifestyle anymore. Though I wonder how it ever did, since back then I had little kids and I stayed up late reading, commenting, and writing. How DID I manage? It’s a conundrum.

I googled “creative journal writing prompts” and it was a bit better, but still along the “what superpower” type of subjects. I guess that’s really the best you can hope for. Maybe the superpower I should wish for is the ability to come up with ideas to write about! Ha! Plus, you know, I think I have probably already written posts about all the subjects that I see on such result lists, over the years. “Something that makes you laugh“, CHECK. “Something that you are grateful for“, CHECK. “Three quirky things about you“, CHECK.

Most of my posts these days seem to be more stream-of-consciousness about what I have cleaned in my house is going on in my life, and what is coming up, what I’m doing, what I’m looking forward to, and that’s perfectly fine. Since I’m NOT looking for stats and hits and engagement, and these posts are mostly for me and posterity, it’s not that big a deal if they’re A) boring, B) personal, and C) random. I realize that I write about this dilemma quite a lot, though, so obviously it bothers me on some level. I think it’s more that I want my writing to be GOOD, regardless of how mundane the subject. Is that too contradictory for words?

I think your superpower is all the cleaning you manage to sneak into a busy life. Respect!
