DEFUSING

Today was lovely. The first day of vacation. Both Anders and I slept in and it was great not to have an alarm go off and to be able to fall asleep again after each of my nighttime bathroom runs. I’ve had a few times lately where I had to get up around 4:30-5 or so and could not get back to sleep. No fun at all on a work night, when you are so tired by 3 pm you could cry.

Then I just stayed in bed after we both woke up around 9:30 (!) and checked email, played some ipad games, and read for a bit. Anders was up having breakfast. I finally got up and showered, and then we got a pile of things done, not all of them important (I put together my advent calendar Moomin puzzle for today). Stripped the bed, started the laundry, emptied the wastebaskets, filled the bird feeders, did a couple of work things that came in late yesterday (which I was waiting for) and did some general tidying up. Anders put Christmas lights on the big bush outside the front door, so our house is officially Christmassy both inside and out as he put up new lights along the roofline yesterday (he took Friday off), which look fantastic.

I’m in the middle of a very good book (The Other Valley by Scott Alexander Howard), which has a fascinating premise, and so far, is very unpredictable about where it’s going. I had a power-nap on the couch around 3 o’clock, waking when I heard the second beep from the washing machine. We made up the bed, and then made up a very long grocery list of the stuff we need for both Christmas Eve and Christmas day. We watched 3 episodes of Queer Eye, and now I’m heading to bed.

A good day for relaxing and recharging, which I will be repeating as much as possible during the 2.5 weeks I have off. One activity got cancelled and one got added, and otherwise, we don’t really have a lot planned at all and that’s fine with me. Tomorrow we’ll go grocery shopping, and then maybe I’ll bake some cookies and try out the new Use Like Sugar.

Karin is coming home Monday to spend several days with us, and Martin will be here in the afternoon on Christmas Eve (he’s working every day until then) at least until the 26th, I think.

My life may sound super boring but honestly, it’s exactly the right pace that I need right now. More relaxing, more recharging!
