We’ve been in the new building since 2022, even though it was ready before that. Since we were 100% at home, we didn’t get back into the office for awhile, and then only gradually. I can’t remember that we have actually had a fire drill before since we’ve been back. I know that there have been drills, but not ones where we had to evacuate.

We’re on the 7th floor, so it’s a long way down when you can’t take the elevator. It’s longer when you have a bad knee and can’t bend one leg so you have to stiff-leg hop down each step. And it’s EVEN longer when the ungodly loud fire alarm is blaring at full strength in your ears the entire way down. We went down the emergency stairwell, which is a metal spiral staircase. I went down one flight and then I stopped and waved the rest of the people that I was holding up past me. Someone has to be the last one down, right? But my ears were badly ringing by the time I made it to the ground floor and out.

Thankfully it wasn’t yet raining (it’s been raining non-stop and solidly most of the day, since the drill was over). I had grabbed my raincoat on the way out of the office as well as my purse. Our gathering spots are at the far end of the parking lot away from the building, and we all collected there and checked to make sure no one was missing. One year, in a different building, when we had a fire alarm, they had put smoke bombs in some of the stairwells and then slapped “I’m dead” stickers on people who went down the stairs through the smoke. I don’t know if they did that with any of the stairwells in our building this time.

At the end of 25 minutes, presumably when the security staff and facilities were done sweeping the floors for negligent remainders, we were let go back in, and they handed out chocolate bars as a reward to everyone for participating.

I know that there are at least a couple of people in wheelchairs that work in my building. I wonder what they do to make sure they get down and outside during a fire. Does someone carry them and their chair? It took me three times the time to get down one-legged that it took everyone else but no one said anything to me about it. Being carried down a spiral staircase would not have been fun.

We’ve had nearly 2 solid weeks of unrelenting sunshine, high temperatures (high 80s! low 90s!), which are unusual for Sweden in September. Today it finally turned, and this entire week is forecast for lower temperatures, rain, and clouds. Autumn is in the air.

Mood: tired
Music: Ava Max—What I Am

We had a fire drill at the office this morning.
