On what?<br \/>\nMartin: Useful words<br \/>\nLiz: Aren&#8217;t all words useful?<br \/>\nMartin: Well, <i>paraplegic<\/i> is less useful than <i>inside<\/i>, for example<br \/>\nLiz: *giggles madly* true<\/p>\n<p>Then the three of us, Anders, Martin and I (Karin is spending the night at a friend&#8217;s house), had a long, drawn-out conversation starting from the fact that Martin asked me if I knew what longer word the Swedish word <i>kompis<\/i> was from. <i>Kompis<\/i> means friend. &#8220;No, I don&#8217;t,&#8221; I answered. &#8220;It&#8217;s from <i>kompanjon<\/i>,&#8221; he told me. <\/p>\n<p>Adding an &#8220;is&#8221; to a word in Swedish turns it into a diminutive or cute version. <i>dagis<\/i> from <i>daghem<\/i> (daycare), <i>godis<\/i> from <i>godsaker<\/i> (candy), <i>grattis<\/i> from <i>gratulerar<\/i> (congratulations), etc. We spent quite a lot of time thinking of what other words in Swedish were commonly used that had <i>-is<\/i> on the end. It was funny and interesting but very long.<\/p>\n<p>I just typed <i>godis<\/i> as <i>dodis<\/i>, and Martin started laughing really hard, and said &#8220;Why? Why do you dodis?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><i>Penis<\/i>, incidentally, is from Latin and has nothing to do with this linguistic phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p><b>Conversation continuing from that one<\/b><br \/>\nMartin: If I have kids I&#8217;m naming the girl Hj\u00f6rdis (note: pronounced <i>Yurdis<\/i>)<br \/>\nLiz: what??<br \/>\nMartin: Yep. And \u00c5sl\u00f6g. (note: pronounced <i>Oh-slug<\/i>)<br \/>\nLiz: Oh no no no.<br \/>\nMartin: Oh yeah, and if I have a boy, I&#8217;m naming him Odd.<br \/>\nLiz: What? Not Jerker?<br \/>\nLiz &#038; Martin: *giggle madly*<\/p>\n<p><b>Conversation before bedtime<\/b><br \/>\nMartin: *all excited* Did you know Florence is going to be in the new Star Wars??!<br \/>\nLiz: Florence from Florence + the Machine?<br \/>\nMartin: Yes!
