I have been to the healthcare clinic 3x this past week, and have yet another appointment on Monday next. The salt baths and sore salve didn’t help but at least it didn’t get worse, but it was still really painful by Sunday evening. I left a chat message asking for an appointment, and lo and behold the next morning I had a message from them with an appointment time at 11:45 AM. I saw Nurse Annika and she couldn’t do much because the toe was so painful, she couldn’t really investigate, so she said the first order of business was to reduce the inflammation. She wrapped it in gauze and told me to apply aluminum acetotartrate solution (alsosprit) 3x a day, told me not to get it wet, which meant no showering, and gave me a follow-up appointment for Wednesday afternoon. She also told me to wear my Birkenstocks, and not closed-toe shoes. (They’re my inside shoes, but I had to wear them all week.)

When I got there on Wednesday, my appointment was with Nurse Anna instead. The toe was no better, but no worse, but she told me to stop with the alsosprit because it can dry things out too much and can actually cause corrosion of the skin (!). I learned a new Swedish word, at least: fräta, which means “to corrode”, though not really one I want to have happen in conjunction with MY SKIN. She put an antiseptic net around the top and side of the nail, and a bandage over, and another follow-up appointment for Friday afternoon.

Thank goodness I have an understanding manager and team, because I must have missed at least 6 hours of work this past week, driving to and from the appointments as well as the time they took. On Friday, my appointment was with yet another nurse, this time Eva, an older woman with a very no-nonsence attitude. She thoroughly cleaned my toe, applied a painkilling cream, and then removed dead skin and dug around to get out the pointy part of the nail that was causing the problem. GAH!!! It hurt so much, I nearly cried. Pain in your toes and feet is no joke. She put another antiseptic cream on, and a bandage, told me not to get it wet, and to reapply the cream every day. And another follow-up appointment for Monday (this time I asked her to please book it with HER, so I don’t get yet another nurse).

BUT! I can already tell the toe is better. It was better yesterday evening even, and even though I took paracetamol, it didn’t hurt AT ALL last night or this morning, and it didn’t look as red when I put the cream and a new bandaid on. Though showering with a bag secured with rubberbands over my foot was a fiasco. 😀 So, I feel much better about things in general, and my toe, specifically.

We have no plans this weekend and I’m so glad. I had so much going on the last two weeks that it is very nice to just be at home, read and play iPad games, do laundry and housecleaning at my own pace, work on a lovely new jigsaw puzzle that Debbie gave me, and take it EASY. Anders is currently hanging new blinds in the kitchen, hurray! The old ones were sagging on one side, which made our house look drunk.

I’m still having to wear my inside shoes everywhere, which is ruining them, but they are so old and beatup that I figured it was time to order new ones anyway, which I did this afternoon. Now I’m going to go puzzle a bit, and then read, because I’ve started a new Natasha Pulley book, and so far, so good. I love her books. I’ve been rereading all of Connie Willis’ books, but I stopped to read this new Pulley, then I’ll go back to them and read the rest.

Happy weekend!

Mood: so much better
Music: Karen Carpenter—If I Had You

My toe was not better by Monday.
